Help!! Windows movie maker problem...

Everything worked fine before.

Now the problem is, when I import a video, the video is corrupted somehow. Video is SPED UP + audio is fine. Then screen is BLACK while audio keeps going (fine) but video has run out of info, cuz it was sped up.

In other words, video is messed up (too fast), while audio runs fine.

What am I doing wrong??

Please advise!

Thanks.

BTW, I am taking the vid off my digital camera (like I always have done in the past).

And, yes, I am saving it to my computer before importing it into movie maker.

    Any recent updates or installs?

Yo may have to go back to a point before any recent updates

Just guessing as I've never had this problem so check with some other people first

When you install a new media player - divx, winamp, windows movie player, quick time - the program will sometimes add its own codex to windows movie maker. Certain codexs cause movie maker to have issues, like crashing all the time.

Awhile back I bought a canon camera, which came with some software. When I installed the canon software, it added its own codex to movie maker without my knowledge. The next time I went to use MM, it crashed. I disabled the new codex, and MM was stable again.

If you do some searches, you should find that media players adding their own codex to movie maker causes all kinds of bad issues. It might not be "one" certain codex that causes the problems. Its when you add all of them together, they do not play nice with each other.

What I suggest you do, is go into movie maker and disable all of the extra codexs. Movie maker is not installed on my work computer, so I can not tell you the exact path. But I think its under options - codex,,,, or something like that. Divx codex seem to be pretty stable, so leave that one checked, and leave windows movie player checked,,,, but disable all the rest.

I'm having trouble with the overall concept here.

The video clip is the video clip. Plays fine in media player -- audi + vid -- fine.

Then I import it into WMM.

Then is the problem how I am SEEING the vid (within WMM) -- or is WMM somehow CHANGING the video clip, so the clip itself is actually corrupted?

Do these codecs change the file or just how I am seeing the file (playing)?

I tried playing around with the codecs (check/uncheck the choices) -- I fix one problem, then cause another -- audio comes + goes mysteriously -- vid gets + ungets corrupted.

    Any ideas?

    Verrry frustrating!
Especially since everything was fine before.

    I fixed it -- I think.

I just checked the first codec I saw on the list, then unchecked all the others + I uninstalled a powerpoint to vid software and a moyea software and some other recently downloaded video-related software.

    Works fine now.

I wonder what'll happen if I reinstall those programs (but leave the new codec options correct)??

    Cheers.

This all happened again -- but now I cannot find the BOX that I found before that allows me to CHOOSE which codecs Movie Maker is using.

Again, what I want is the dialog box where I can *CHOOSE* which codecs are being used (NOT the box where I can REMOVE codecs (I CAN find THAT box!)).

Any ideas. (I KNOW there IS a box where I can CHOOSE the codecs being used (check/uncheck)) -- question is, where is that box??? I know it exists! I used it before!

I think a custom profile would help you. Install Windows Media Center 9 or its successor. (Do some Googling). Build a custom profile and be as specific about the codecs as you can. I like to set it to WMV 8 so I can save as wmv but still convert to flv if I want. Although I am more likely to open it with AviSynth and save to an mp4 FFDShow codec, but that takes more knowledge

well i have never heard of that actually , but try to minimise the size of your video or change its format to mp4 for example that will make movie maker respond in a better way , i Hope

I really have no idea what you said (I don't/cannot understand) -- but I thank you for trying to inform me. The real question is, why (oh why) does doing stuff on the comp. always result in having to "learn a new hobby?"

That is, why must it be(come) so DAMN complicated?

The sure fire signal that everything is about to turn into UTTER CRRRAP, is when one tries to "improve" upon what one already has going.

This particular "downfall" happened when I forgot that rule (improving things turns everything into CRAP!), and innocently tried to install a "better" piece of movie-making software. Yup... instant mess/crap.

The improvement ended up taking the form of HOURS of frustration, BEGINNING with the UNinstall of the "better" software!

Lesson learned (unfortunately): DON'T attempt to improve things -- just sit in the corner + SHUT UP.

        Bothersome -- quite bothersome.

        (((sigh)))

    FOUND IT!

That dialog box is WITHIN movie maker. Go to tools, then options.
