What if i am passionate about my niche but it is way too oversaturated

Hello everyone,
this is my first post.I've been reading the forum for a while and i learned a lot,many thanks to all of you who give advices.But let's say i found some profitable niches(good daily searches,SEO value,low competition,etc.) but had only general knowledge in there,so i'll have to find more content for them.
The problem is that i'm really passionate about the fitness industry and this is the main niche i know a lot about and have a good knowledge base.What would you do?Dig deeper for sub niches like muscle building supplement reviews or go with the other niches?

  • If you're passionate about it then just go for it, the fact you really enjoy the niche should help you get through the slow growing period simply because you'll still enjoy what you're doing (at least that's what passion means to me). Of course apply all best practices and IM strategies. Create wicked content and use social media and make sure your SEO is locked down.

    Fitness/Weight loss/Healthy lifestyle is an enormous market, there is still room for you to get into it Good luck.

      But what if you were unexperienced(as is my case) and this is your first niche site,would you go with the big fitness niche or the others,which seem a lot easier to me ?

  • I suggest find a keyword that has (good searches,SEO value,low competition,etc.) in the fitness niche. 4 or 5 words maybe good enough for this competitive niche......

  • I don't see a problem with marketing in the fitness industry. Sure, there's lots of competition, but there's also a huge audience.

    I have several page one rankings for long-ish tail fitness keywords and that's not by any means my main market (i.e. I'm not trying very hard).
    In other words: You can find lots of opportunities to get yourself in front of a specific sub-group in fitness and work your way up from there.

  • Go for it.

    The competition in most niches isn't passionate people. It's people who want money. And the public, in most cases, can easily tell whether you are in this niche to make a buck... or to make a difference.

    If you're passionate about the niche, it will show, and you'll be able to gather a better and more responsive audience than the hucksters who got into the niche for fat commissions and big-ticket CPA offers.

    It will be slower to start than a niche with less competition, so you may want to put some effort into other areas, too. But in the long run? Your passions will usually steer you in the right direction.

  • Do you have experience or knowledge that can make your site rise above the rest?

    Lets say that you have a degree in nutrition, and you were in the military for 4+ years. That makes the content you post have a certain level of authority to it.

    Which one would you rather read:

    A health blog by a medical doctor that is a specialist with 20 years experience.

    A health blog by some high school drop out that does not know the slightest thing about health, besides what he reads on yahoo news and CNN.

    Now then, what do you bring to the table?

    • I'm not a nutritionist,nor a fitness trainer.I just like training,dieting and i do this for over 2 years now,have some good knowledge as i said because i went to many trial and errors,but i am not 100 % sure if people would be interested.That was exactly my point,if you are passionate about your niche,but are not an expert,is it worth to go for it?It will be very hard for a big niche like this,very hard...
  • For me, if I see that the niche is too saturated, then go for the "how", as in how will you do the marketing... You know, there are different ways that you can bring out your products. e-book is not the ONLY way; it's just one of the ways that you can market. You can try doing podcasting or videoing, which are quite popular as well.

    Watch the competition, see what are the stats each do, then go for it.

    • Well it would be very hard to make another bodybuilding(dot)com site
    • lol, my girlfriend said the same thing recently. She's not an IMer (yet, lol) but we were discussing ideas for new sites and she had an idea that was good but I mentioned that it was a 'saturated market' and she said 'think of facebook, what if they never started b/c of myspace'. This is a very good point.

      I have read on here or somewhere that a 'large' niche or 'saturated' niche just means there are more 'buyers' so whereas it may be tough in the beginning you can really get lots of profits once you are successful.

      Even with first hand knowledge of the popularity of the weight-loss niche I am still building a 'weight-loss' site for my girlfriend. The key is to find a way to differentiate yourself and let your passion shine through.

      For example, my girlfriend has lost over 60 lbs and is still losing. This will be our way of differientating her site. She also has tons of knowledge on vitamins and supplements and 'raw' foods. She also concocted her own 'diet' that she calls a 'shipwreck diet'.

      Just take the time to plan ahead and you and your site will be successful. Obesity is a growing concern in our society and it is only going to rise, so that means this 'saturated' market will continue to grow. So just grab you a small slice and hold on for the ride.

  • I love the fact that you are looking at your passion as a way to make a business for yourself. I do believe that your market will respond to that passion over time as you develop relationships with your readers - You can learn experience and technical know-how but you can't fake passion.   • You don't have to tackle the entire fitness niche at once - instead, find your own little piece of the pie that you can dominate and start from there.

    "Fitness" as a keyword probably has an ungodly amount of competing search results.

    "Arm weight exercises for women" is probably a lot easier to get started with, and still allows you to be passionate about your project.

  • I would find a long tail keyword phrase with log competition and sufficient searches and run with it. If you're passionate, it will show in the content and rank.

      I think your passion for the niche makes it an absolutely ideal niche for you ... as your second or third niche, after you've gained some experience on something less competitive to start with.

      There are always non-competitive, clever, inventive, imaginative ways into these so-called "saturated" niches. Always. And when you have some of the experience which by your own admission you're currently lacking, you might have the odds more in your favour in trying to identify and exploit one of them. I'd save it up for when you know more.

      My answer to Steven's point above about regretting not "going for it" is that you owe it to yourself to "go for it" when you have the odds in your favour, not as a first attempt. Go for it, by all means: it would be feeble not to, but maybe a little later? It would be a real shame, and something to regret even more, if you were unlucky with it through inexperience.

  • go for it. there is so much money to be made it that niche. just pick your angle.

    If your passionate about it than i believe it will be that much easier for you succeed in it. remember that you dont always have to rely on Google. if it your passion and you are active in the Fitness communities i'm sure your can build a good list very fast.

  • If you are really passionate, then I would recommend that you start by dominating a "micro-niche", and after you have completely overtaken your competition, you start growing your site to cover more "micro-niches".

    By dominating more and more micro-niches, you will increase your PR (because you'll have to build backlinks for every one of these niches) and you will also earn some bucks.
    With these 2, you will be able to move on to bigger niches, and start earning big and writing about the things you love.

  • Saturation just means theres allot of money to be made there.
    Or else no one would bother entering the niche.

    I only market in huge niches.
    They equal huge pay days and HUGE 7 figue online empires.
  • If you are passionate about fitness, I'm sure you know everything that everyone is already selling as sub-niches to fitness. The best bet is to find something you can be creative with that will meet a need that is not already being met. Think about it and do your research. I'm sure you can come up with something that will fly. Good Luck!

  • I wouldn't get intimidated by a highly competitive niche, to me, such niche only means there are a lot of audience, with a lot of problems and waiting for someone like you who is sincere to help them. You could bring this message across to them through your content. When people find it useful, like it, feel the passion in you and trust you, they will follow you. Bottom line is surfers wanted quality content and if you do not have it, they will move on. Being passionate almost guarantee your success, it is now up to you whether you want to work towards it.

      How can you say this, about an endeavour in which such a tiny proportion ever become successful? Are you seriously suggesting that all the hundreds of thousands (if not millions) of failed internet marketers simply "lacked passion" and that all would, by definition, have been well for them, "almost guaranteed", if they'd had it? Superficially, it's a really attractive theory, to be sure, but if you'll excuse my sounding like a skepchick, I think it actually stands up to examination only for about 5 seconds. In my opinion, knowing what you're doing and having the ability to follow a simple, proven, reliable, duplicable formula/template are far more desirable attributes.

    Let's go through your options again.

    1) go with the profitable niches that you have general knowledge in

    2) go into the fitness niche which you are passionate about


    What I think you should do: Either one.

    That's right. In this case it does not matter.

    If you decide to go with option 1, you can either do some research or you could outsource it. Lack of knowledge really isn't a problem in this case since you only need to know a bit more than your customer (in order to provide them with value).

    If you decide to go with option 2, it will be better to focus on a more narrow niche. This is what you should do with any niche really, so it isn't a problem.

      It's a good niche. Plenty to write about. The hazards of sitting motionless for days on end with their legs crossed. The physical benefits of meditation (or sometimes "mediation" if you also want the additional "typo traffic"). The risks of cutaneous absorption of toxins from the clay. I can see it now ...

  • Depends. If this are the first sites that you are building go with the simplest niche that you can find. Choosing a harder niche for your first sites makes a lot of people quit after a while when they can not see any apparent progress. In a low competition niche you will see progress almost right away.

    When you test for yourself how things work then go for a harder niche, if you are passionate about something I am sure you will succeed. But even in that case, start small, start with more long tail niches and work your way up.

  • Being passionate is indeed very good, atleast you have thorough knowledge of something but my friend in today's world it will not work. You should be jack of all traits, if not then you should know some or the other thing extra or than what others possess. Competition is fierce, you should change yourself according to time.
  • Absolutely - go after the fitness niche, but you need to do some more work (well if you call it work :-)

    1. Find out some of the reasons why people are seeking out info on fitness. What result do they want to achieve and how can you help them get it

    2. What questions do they have about the fitness program they have chosen - what frustrations are they experiencing? What desired outcome are they aiming for and what could you do to help them achieve that outcome quicker with less pain and disruption or cost?

    Asking those questions will get you the angle you need to enter competitive markets like fitness.

    • Over-saturation in a market can be a good thing. You can target a sub-market:

      1. You sub-segment by demographics to target a different and specific group of people looking for a solution to the same problem (take weight loss as an example)


      2. Instead of advertising your product with your usual keywords which everybody else is targeting like “weight Loss”, focus on your targeted group of people like “weight loss for women over 40″. In this way, you can be sure you will get very targeted traffic coming to your website.

    MichaelHiles is giving you brilliant advice.

    You were already alluding to it yourself when you mentioned "muscle building supplements". What you need to do is find the areas within the fitness market you can work on today with articles and content to start driving traffic, while you build a persona and authority within the overall fitness market.

    As Alexa is saying, too. Do not just jump into the middle of "Weight Loss" and expect to be a success, find areas you can be successful in by getting into more precisely targeted markets, or areas of fitness.

    Think in detailed fitness areas. "Losing stomach fat after having a baby", "How To Lose Body Fat After Bypass Surgery", "Increasing Back Strength After An Injury"

    Passion will not guarantee success, but it does guarantee you are more willing to work at it.

  • Plow on through with the niche, because it is a good one to jump into.

    However, just because you are passionate about a niche isn't necessarily good enough reason to jump in.

    I can be insanely passionate about hydroponic dandelion growing, but the niche just wont pan out. Just look at the numbers and the potential of the niche. As far as competition, when there are so many people looking for this niche then you only need a sliver to make some decent scratch.

  • I agree with most of what people are saying on this thread. I am also very passionate about the fitness niche, I have owned a off line business and read voraciously on the subject.

    I think the best option, to echo many others thoughts, is to develop a niche and go at it hard.
