Recently I was fortunate enough to have someone tranfer me a registered domain name called healthandfitnessmagazine.net It was transfered to my GoDaddy account. Here's the thing and I know I'm going to look like a total a** for saying this, but what do I need to do next. How do I get the actuall website up and going. Can i just design the webpage on godaddy or do I have to upload HTML files to it I'm really lost as to what I should do now?

Thanks guys

  • JT,
Since GoDaddy has hosting service available they should have c-panel included. This is where you would develop and load your web pages to the server. C-Panel has a built in html editor as well as a code editor so you can build your pages right there. You could also use an editor on your computer to build your pages and then load them to the server through C-Panel or using an FTP client.

    Hope this helps

    • thank you very much that was helpful. What if don't know any HTML do
they have templates I can use. What would recommend I do as far as designing the webpage. I have a blogger account that I got started on to get my feet wet in IM. That was easy becuase I didn't need to know how to design a page. What should be my next step?

      Thanks again

  • Have you bought hosting from godaddy? If you don't have a hosting account then you will need to buy one, although it is largely recommended you do not use the same company you have the domain registered at to host.

Hostgator and bluehost are popular choices to host the website at. If you are on a limited budget then a free option would be weebly, although there are limitations on what you can do with them.

    • I like Weebly.

It's quick and simple for the beginner.

You can use you're own domain with either the free or pro account.
Free account is two domains, pro is ten.
It uses google apps for email, so you can set up email going directly to your domain name and not something weird.
  • Godaddy doesn't use cpanel, they have their own "special" way of doing things that is about 100 times more difficult than any other hosting platform.

But, just because your domain name is at godaddy doesn't mean you have to host with them so if you want to get hosting from a place that has cpanel (like hostgator) I have some videos that can help you get a wordpress blog up and running.

    • I was a little annoyed to find out about that several months ago when I was helping a client with his hosting on Godaddy! Cpanel is tried and tested, and I've seen it on just about every hosting company that I've encountered, but Godaddy just has to do things differently and confuse the heck out of everyone.

For the OP, if you haven't already signed up for hosting with Godaddy, please don't! Try to shoot for a hosting company that at least has a usable Cpanel.

  • I agree with the others - if you don't have the hosting (which is a separate service GoDaddy offers) then you would be better to use somewhere like Hostgator that has a Cpanel and for a non-techie like me a great customer service facility as well

    Best of luck

  • Hostgator is an excellent host and have loads of videos and tutorials to help get you started. They even show you how to forward your domain to your hosting account.

    Definitely recommend HostGator.

Congrats on the great domain name!

  • So, to further simplify this. Get a host, like HostGator.
    • Once you sign up you'll get a cpanel login.
    • Add your domain to cpanal (you'll find the right icon, i think its call "addon domains.")
    • On the left menu, near the bottom, you'll see the DNS settings. Copy those.
    • Log in to GoDaddy and click the Domain Manager.
    • Find your domain in the list and click it.
    • Find (i think) Manage DNS, click the last radio button and then enter in the Host Gator DNS numbers you copied earlier (there should be two strings of them), and click save.

That should do it, your site should go "live" in a few minutes. Then you'll need an FTP program to send files to the host, or use HostGators built in FTP system. This should be mostly right unless I goofed this up. This was from memory but its' more or less accurate.

    Hope it helps

  • I also would recommend using HostGator as your webhost, they have inexpensive plans and extremely quick and helpful technical support, I wouldn't use godaddy's hosting if someone paid me too But their domain support is excellent! Once you have your hosting setup through hostgator (when you sign up, sign up with your existing domain name) they will send you the nameservers names in an email, just go into your godaddy account, click on your domain name and change your nameservers to the ones that hostgator sends to you. They should look something like this NS1.nameserver.com, NS2.nameserver.com. After you change those, then just wait up to 24 hours for the nameservers to propogate to your hosting account, once you see your domain with a blank cgi page, then you can login to your cpanel and upload your html files, upload your files into the /public html folder for them to be viewable on the internet. If you need help doing any of this just pm me, I'd be more than happy to help
  • Hmmm.... so are you saying that he transferred the domain to you and you need to get the files up on your hosting? BTW - it appears to be empty when I go to healthandfitnessmagazine.net so I'm not sure what you are asking, I guess.

  • There's a difference between transferring the domain and transferring the entire site. Did you buy an entire website or just the domain name?
    • [1] reply
    • I didn't buy anything he just did it to help a fellow IMer to get started.
  • OK, well that was nice of him.

I think all our advice above still stands though.

It looks like you already have hosting because when I go to your site I see files. So now you just need to ftp your website files up there. Do you have website files?

    Lee
  • Do you know if he just gifted you the domain, or also the actual site content and files (assuming there was something there to begin with)?

    • when i type in the address healthandfitnessmagazine.net I get a a page that says:

      Index of/

      cgi-bin/

      what does this mean?

and how would I have hosting. Is this because of my GoDaddy account that TPFLegionaire had me sign up for so he could transfere the account.
I didn't pay for any hosting I know that. And Would there be web files in the cpanel login that was given to me.

I feel like i'm just confusing everyone including myself. sorry
  • That means that you have hosting ... or it could be the domain is still pointing to TPFLegionaire's hosting. Not sure which. With any luck we will ask you so many questions that you will soon be able to PM him (or her)

    • ok so I do have hosting through GoDaddy than. Because don't you get free hosting for 1 domain when you first register or something. and How would I know if he tranfered web files with the domain. would they be in
      healthandfitnessmagazine.net/cpanel
  • I have all my domain names from godaddy but i have a hostgator account were some of my websites sit, it's like $10 per month but I also have like 10 websites at a free hosting company called 000webhost.com they have MySQL for databases and all that good stuff plus they have pretty good visitor tracking information. For hostgator and 000webhost you have to make your own website and then upload it. A good free hosting company that has a webpage editor is weebly.com. You design your own website on weebly with an easy to use editor that works something like microsoft word, with options for bold text, adding pictures, links creating a banner and changing background colors. When you're done you push publish and then it's online, simple as that.

You can go to one of my sites Make Websites Yourself for information on the basics of creating websites, getting hosting and domain names.
  • no, the cpanel is just the way to manage the site and as you can see by going to the domain there are no files there so I'm not sure what the person did with the files.

I think though that the domain might still be pointing to the previous owners hosting unless you changed the DNS servers for it.

    • Hi,

While it's still early days, use GoDaddy as the domain registrar and move to either Bluehost or Hostgator for your hosting. Point your DNS to Bluehost or Hostgator in your GoDaddy account.

GoDaddy is awkward in terms of the filing structure for your files, especially if you host multiple domains.

Plus they're pretty expensive and their cPanel is cumbersome.
  • Well,

I go away for a week and I come back to this Kerfuffle

    here is what's happening

    I gave a domain name
I gave one year hosting (I have a hostgator reseller account)

I explained that (obviously very badly! ) in my pm and emails to Henry.

So you have a domain name, which was successfully transferred from my godaddy account to yours and I gave you hosting for a year (on hostgator), this is why you have a Cpanel, so you can manage your account.

Now , Henry, please get on with the program!
  • OK all...

    He has a hosting account...

Hostgator...I gave it to him...free for a year....

Jamie...Get that , you done that wordpress install yet?
