How Much Traffic Can Shared Hosting Handle?

Hello Warriors,
I have a few questions about hosting. For years I have been on shared hosting with about 30 sites and very little traffic and only a handful of affiliates and have never had a problem. I am with hostgator for $9.95/month.

I was recently looking into big Clickbank launches and after hearing stories of people getting a lot of traffic their hosting then will ask them to upgrade to a dedicated server.

So what I am wondering from anyone who has experience with high volumes of traffic is how much traffic can a shared hosting account handle before they want you to upgrade to dedicated?

Would it be a huge mistake to try a big Clickbank launch on shared hosting?

Is it safe to assume the top 10 products in the make money online/e marketing section of Clickbank are on dedicated servers?

Just trying to figure when I need to go dedicated as the cost is steep, about $175/month at least and I would have to turn a profit fast to afford that each month.

      Mikey,

It really DOES depend! But you really can't wait to upgrade. If you ***NEED*** to upgrade during a launch, your site may get shut down, etc... The problem isn't YOUR site or whether the server can handle YOUR site. Suppose your server can handle TWICE as many people! They will likely shut you down. WHY? Because there aren't enough resources to handle OTHER users!

If you go into a launch as a major partner and they tend to have a lot of traffic at the same time, you very well might exceed limits EVEN with simple HTML pages.

What do you mean by large quantities of traffic? Quality shared hosting can easily handle 50 0000-100 000 unique visitors per day, but even if you have 200 visitors per day and run some heavy scripts that cripple the server, it is very likely that you would be politely asked to either upgrade or move your sites somewhere else. Also, dedicated is not your only option - I have one VPS server with around 100 or so sites, receiving quite a bit of traffic and I am paying for it only $40 per month and have 1 000 GB monthly traffic, 15 GB Storage, and 1GB Dedicated RAM....

If the moment comes when you really have to move to dedicated, you should be making at least a few hundred $$$ per day and then the $175 monthly fee would be the least of your worries

If you're not ready for a whole server then get a managed VPS (Virtual Private Server) plan for about $40-$50 per month. Basically it's your own fixed portion of a server: Best value VPS Hosting plans - Web Hosting Diary

Not all shared hosting is equal.

Hostgator will certainly do that, it appears to be one of the fundamentals of their business plan.

I really dont understand why so many people recommend Hostgator. Actually I do, it's because of the huge affiliate payments that are far bigger than any other host offers.

A VPS would be a good option, as mentioned above but choose your host wisely.
