Acquiring back links for a begginer

Alright so i understand that the key to a good rank is a combination of on and off page SEO. Now i understand the main component to off page SEO is back links. The part i don't understand is how exactly does one acquire back links. So how do you acquire back links?

Here is a very simple method for new people.

Install SEOQuake for firefox..Go to a competitor's site or a niche related site. Click the linked domains button. Go to all the sites they have backlinks at and create one too.

*NOTE* You may not be able to get links on em all, but I'm betting quite a few

    Good question!

As one of the others just wrote; backlinks just means links pointing back to your website or webpage. It should include the keyword/keywords you are optimizing your website for (the term you whish to rank for in the search engines) as anchor text. For instance if your site is about RED CARS your link could be titled "Best Red Cars" if that is what you try to optimize for.

There are many, many , many different methods to getting backlinks. There are always discussions about what works and what doesn't work etc but the fact is that it is pretty much individual.

Some popular and often good methods to get backlinks cheaply when you are just starting out is...

Article Marketing, Blog Commenting (posting comments on other peoples blogs with a link back to your site in the name or website field), forum profile creation, putting articles on Squidoo, Hubpages etc, buying links or trading links with other webmasters etc etc... Find something that works with your budget and stick with it. That's my advice :-)

Also, you should pay attention to whether the links you're creating are DOFOLLOW. The NOFOLLOW backlinks do have some value, but they won't pass any authority to your site in the eyes of Google.
There's some nice info plus a list of dofollow sites at (can't post links, sorry) a Squidoo lens titled "Dofollow".
You can also check SEOQuake's nofollow highlight option.
