Google Instant - Good or Bad News for Marketers?

So, today, my wife was doing her usual watching of breakfast telly whilst I was busy counting the orders that had come in overnight

Anyway, in she came - to my study, that is - to announce that Google had released Google Instant today and did I realise, she asked, how it would affect me?

Just in case you don't know what Google Instant is, there's a great video here ...

YouTube - Google Instant with Bob Dylan
Funnily enough, I had just watched that video only yesterday. Anyway back to the story ...

So I asked her how it would affect me. Presumably, the TV coverage had said it would be bad for small businesses because that's effectively what she said.

Now I am not at all sure this is the case. I asked her if they had they explained why. She said, "there would be less keywords ... or something like that".

I've been thinking about this and obviously there won't be less keywords as such, but perhaps it will mean there will be less typing of longer tails; and hence, those sites that are targeting them might suffer, but I am still not sure.

Would welcome your thoughts on this.

Will

PS Just in case you have never used it before, you need to login to your Google account to make it work.

  • You missed out option 4 - We don't really know at this point and it's useless speculating.

Just watch and learn, adapt if you need to - you may find out it's better for you.

I turned it right back off as soon as they turned it on.

I don't personally see how it will result in less keywords - if anything it'll probably be more because as people type they're being given suggestions that they weren't already typing.

It just means someone wanting to looking for "pink sparkly leather dog collars for poodles" won't have to type quite so many letters, but they'll see some interesting ideas come up while they do

    • Time will tell with Google as with all things, to be upset over this is as to be unsure. One thing we always should keep in mind is what works. Yes, of course dynamics change, but sound principles never do.

What do we teach, let us each answer that within ourselves.
  • It is a chance for those who fear the big, bad Google dragon to panic, run in circles, and declare the coming apocalypse...

For those who are a bit more optimistic, it is a chance to rejoice...

None of us really know what it is going to do for us at the search traffic level, but I strongly believe that it will be a boost to those webmasters who specialize in offering real value to consumers...

What in the world happened guys and gals?

Before yesterday, you were proclaiming the promise of Web 2.0 as being a blessing for marketers, and now that Google has adopted Web 2.0 in their search results, you are going to claim that it will be the ruin of us all?

    Wow!

It amazes me how so many people can go from optimist to pessimist in one day -- all because the Google dragon has added pretty feathers to its wings...

p.s. If this puts you out of business, maybe the fault is not in Google changing how it operates, but you putting all of your eggs into one basket... Don't you remember that important lesson from grade school?

I have the impression, that this BIG GIANT "Google" wants to capture all.If Google will make major changes will be bad, very bad.And then you can only depend on Adwords. Like the big companies...are.... they don't realy care about the costumer opinion. They see just money in front of their eyes.

I don't know if will be so....I said just what's the apocalypse!

Anyway...if Google will make something like this.... Yahoo and the other search engines...will be powerful. So, I think we have alternatives...if something like this will happen( less probably).

  • I always think that small innovative entrepreneurs have a head start when things change, I suspect particularly in the SEO area, there will be a short window of opportunity before the larger organisations catch up as they inevitably lag behind initially, once they have the movement going they opportunities for small scale innovation will with draw again into niches.

So get thinking interacting quickly wilst the gate is open
  • It remains to be seen.

    Just keep watching those analytics...
  • Face it...if you don't give to G, you will be out of the picture sooner or later

    • I don't agree. If you provide unique and original content that has value, you will never be out of the picture. You own the content, not Google.

  • In my own opinion I see long tail keywords starting to dominate search engines as people will most obviously go for long tail phrases that match their queries.

Am not worried as my keywords are largely long tail and this should boost my SEO.

  • So far, Analytics reports show no difference from other days. Yesterday was not much different from other Thursdays.

We really have to wait to see the results.

  • It is probably great news, but time will tell.

Change has a tendency to shake out poor marketers, and open the doors for good marketers.

  • Good or bad does't really matter as it is what it is and we cannot change it so adapt and prosper.

  • I'm struggling to work out what difference it makes to SEO or PPC marketers?

The prediction feature was already present, and helps to save typing time for searchers. They don't fire up Google and type in the letter "a" and hope their query is met. They already know what they're looking for and want to type, so the suggested long tails that show up actually help them, and the marketers.

If anything, MIGHT hurt broader advertisers or PPC marketers bidding on broad terms, but the money is in the long tail anyway, if you ask most people.

Either way, I can't see what real different it makes. The results haven't changed. It just makes the search process easier?!!

    • Probably just less mis-spelled keyword traffic.

  • I think marketers will see some added value in their long-tail keyword efforts, and could get unintentional hits from curious searchers who notice the shiny objects. That's what I'm hoping for.
  • So far I see it as a positive or just neutral. I've seen no negative rankings for my sites or my clients sites so far.....so we'll see.

  • Not long ago, I was curious what impact the new would have on my web properties. So I ran a few tests.

Now that is in full swing, I ran a similar set of tests and so far, my web sites are still ranking.

I was a big fan of the Google and now its gone poof! So I am lucky that I have Market Samurai and Micro Niche Finder to do my KW research. Even though the search COUNTS for these Long tails has changed, the rankings have remained pretty much the same (so far) but that's no guarantee 2-3 weeks from now I won't get bumped from page 1.

So yeah, like others have said, its still to early to tell, but we have to watch what happens moving forward.
