Keyword Research Help

Hi All

Apologies if this is a question that has been asked before.

I am doing some keyword research to find an accessible niche - primarily I am using Market Samurai (below 30000 competition).

Some of my keywords have Amazon pages in the first few spots of Google. Can I infer from this that the keyword is in fact very accessible even though those competing pages have a very high number of backlinks?

Thanks

Raj

  • Hi Raj, why would you not expect Amazon to be ranked highly for those terms? Amazon has some of the most powerful SEO on the planet.

Personally, I wouldn't use that as any kind of indicator.

    Thanks Impact

The only reason I ask is that normally I don't find Amazon at the top of Google pages for niches that I am researching. For some of these new keywords 3rd 4th and 5th spots have sites with minimal backlinks, domain ages of less than a year and PR0.

I suppose I likened the Amazon spots like I would high ranking articles - millions of backlinks but apparently easily bettered by a well optimised site with quality content and backlinking.

If it's a product keyword, it's only natural that you'll se Amazon up there, but that doesn't mean that it can't be beaten. Amazon is a very authoritative site, but how much do you think they concentrate on building links to individual pages..?

Now, it's hard for me to say anything else about your keywords, unless you tell more about your other competitors (the top 10!)

      Hope this helps.

    Thanks Mugil & Simon

Simon - good advice - but are you saying that Amazon being there for a keyword pretty much confirms commercial intent?

    Mugil -
For one of my keywords Amazon holds the top 2 spots.
The next spot is taken by a simple site PR0 with a total of 2 backlinks
The next by a site with PR4 9 year old domain with 85 backlinks(1 is PR5) to that domain.
The next by 3 yr old domain PR0 and 76 backlinks
..... Next three P"0-PR2, with max 2130 backlinks
Last three on first page taken by CBS news and 2 youtube videos

Only 1 site has the basic site opyimisation (keyword in domain name, meta, etc)

I hope that is clear, but is seems to me that there is room for manouevre here.

    What do you think?

when doing your actual competition research on the GOOGLE search engines that search term in quotes?

"my keyword phrase" or just my keyword phrase in the search box.

Silly question I know, but it makes a big difference

I'd say that sounds pretty promising. Like one of the previous posters said, you might be able to knock Amazon off, since it's unlikely they SEO their specific product pages very well. But even if you can't, there's still a lot of opportunity there.

Go for it, and if it winds up being too tough after a month or two, look for something else

Looks pretty easy to me. But does it also have enough search volume?

    Thanks BigDaddts101

I do use quotes always, and I beleive MS uses the same method to extract its numbers.

    Thanks Sarah

I'm glad you can see what I thought I could see. I will give it a go and see where this leads me.

    Thanks again
