I know this question's been asked before, but can I host a domain that I bought on namecheap on my godaddy hosting?

Yes, but there are better hosting companies out there (like HostGator).

Yes, but dont use GoDaddy for hosting. Domain Reg's fine, hosting no.

Doesn't matter where you bought your domain, you can host it on any hosting provider. Just need to add the correct nameservers.

As a general rule of thumb dont host any domain with the same company you registered it with.

If you ever decide to switch hosts then the hosting company could make it more difficult to make the move than it should be. It happens.

Smaller, less reputable hosting companies you register domains through may put their details as the owner and charge you a kings ransom to maintain them or transfer them out.

You should always see domains and hosting as two separate things imho. Use a registrar for registering your domains and use a host for hosting them. Dont host with a registrar, and dont register with a host.

I don't really like Godaddy's hosting for the simple fact that they overcomplicate things and do NOT use Cpanel, unlike just about every hosting company out there. There are far better hosts out there such as Hostgator and Bluehost - I even find the myriad hosting plans at Godaddy confusing and unnecessarily complicated!

signup for hostgator at 1 cent. Use coupon code JURY. Point your domain's nameservers to hostgator.

    AND PLEASE FORGET ABOUT GODADDY.

I DISLIKE GO DADDY SO MUCH THAT I DON'T EVEN LIKE TO SPEND TIME TALKING ABOUT IT.

Tis funny cos I really dont like Hostgator. They really are the bargain basement (Dreamhost excepted) of hosting with service to match but so many people push them because they pay the best affiliate commisions out of any host.

Wait until you actually get some traffic and they start upselling their VPS/Dedi's or closing your site down because you used too much of that 'unlimited' bandwidth.

I also like Bluehost. I don't like hostgator to the same degree as that of disliking godaddy.

Hostgator is good but one thing that is not so fine about them is that they limit a shared account to 100,000 files and they don't mention it. And they also will suspend your account if you "consume too much of CPU resources".

What do you recommend/use for hosting?

Yeah Deepak, the 'inodes' thing (number of files) is another one with hostgator. I agree, they'll also tell you your using 'too much server resources' as soon as they can and push their upgrades.

I heard good things about bluehost but dont have an account with them myself, so no experience to speak of.

As for hosts I do use and would recommend (no aff links):
Web Hosting | Unix Hosting | Cyberwurx I have two VPS accounts with them
AmeriNOC | Hosting The World! | Managed Web Hosting one VPS with them
with both of these I have never waited more than 10 mins for a reply to support tickets and never had any downtime in years. The typical "small enough to care but not too large they dont" companies. If I exceed my bandwidth limit they dont shut my site down, they simply charge a little extra at the end of the month.

Web Hosting and Website Hosting Services in the UK by eUKhost shared acount with them. I use this for my UK focused sites as they are based in the UK and using a UK host for UK targeted sites give you a little boost in UK Google.

I have another shared hosting account I wouldn't recommend - webair.com. In the process of moving sites.

Hosting is the cornerstone of your business. Imagine you've paid for a PPC campaign or an ad campaign and your site is down because of some arbitrary BS reason. Don't scrimp on hosting!

A lot of slamming on Godaddy. While there are many other hosting services and domain registrars out there...Godaddy isn't that bad. Yeah, they don't use Cpanel, but a lot of webmasters could live without Cpanel too. I have some that don't use Cpanel and they serve their purpose.

Look at what you need and ask yourself if your hosting and domain registrar service is able to do the job.

So far, I haven't see a domain registrar that could not use a 3rd party hosting account. I use namecheap with all sorts of hosting services.

There are better hosting services than Godaddy,i don't like them personally as they are too expensive and do not use CPanel.Ihave used them before with no problems. If you do not mind the expense or the fact they do not have CPanel then go ahead.Otherwise you can find a better hosting service which is more cost effective
