Membership scripts like amember, RAP (membership add on) and digitalaccesspass.com,

they let you upload content for your membership site, but are they also merchant accounts?

-do they accept credit card payments?
-and send you the cheques from your members subscriptions?

basically do they do what clickbank does- are a vertified membership site?? but for your membership site?

They interact with the payment processor scripting or API -
in the case of Paypal it's pretty simple, but with some merchant
accounts you may need to hire a programmer to help you get
    it set up right.

This is not the fault of the membership script developers - it's
because the merchant accounts have security systems that
are basically as fussy and intricate as those used by your
    bank.

The membership scripts handle delivery of access to your
product - the ongoing access to the private site. The script
may tell the merchant account when to rebill the customer,
but the membership script itself doesn't actually handle a
money transaction, just the delivery of the product.

Merchant account and integration with its gateway is COMPLETELY different from third party processors like clickbank and paypal.

If you have a merchant account, you can take creditcards directly from your buyer and process it. But as I said above it needs integration with the gateway of the marchant account provider. Ex: Authorizenet, Linkpoint

If you have an account with clickbank, paypal etc, they will take creditcard details from your buyer on your behalf, process and take some fee from it.

If you are still a beginner, better start with 2checkout, paypal or clickbank. Easy to manage.

RAP does. I really like that program and would suggest you take a look at that one. Of course, I have a tech so can't even start to guess if it's user friendly or not if you're doing your own installation.

No, in itself it doesn't. It is NOT a "merchant account", not even a simple payment processor.
RAP works with your PayPal account (premier or business).

To the OP: none of the scripts you listed will process any payment. They are not merchant accounts. They don't send cheques to you.

Thanks for clearing that up. Perfect timing.

Also agree with other posters saying to start with PayPal. I would, however recommend you get a delivery system like E-Junky because a lot of people have trouble with people not redirecting them back after payment with PP.

Just something I noticed with WSOs. Most people will get their stuff, and some people want refunds because they weren't redirected or didn't hit the return to merchant button. Argh!
