Psychological Advertising Techniques That Make People Buy

These are taken from the book cashvertising.

I highly recommend this book. Go on amazon and buy it immediately. I believe it's the single most important book for marketers of any type.

The-Life-Force 8: Human beings are biologically programmed with the following eight desires:

1.Survival, enjoyment of life, life extension.
2. Enjoyment of food and beverages
3. Freedom from fear, pain, and danger
4. Sexual Companionship
5. Comfortable living conditions
6. To be superior, winning, and keeping up with Joneses
7. Care and protection of loved ones
8. Social approval

In addition, nine learned (secondary) human wants have been identified:

1. To be informed.
2. Curiosity.
3. Cleanliness of body and surroundings.
4. Efficiency.
5. Convenience.
6. Dependability/quality.
7. Expression of beauty and style.
8. Economy/profit.
9. Bargains.

I really think this is powerful stuff and it should be generating discussion. I'll just bump it up this one time since it was pretty early in the morning when I made the thread.

Well it's kinda difficult to comment about the book, because I haven't read it. I think others here might have the same difficulty.

And to some extent your list, without reading the text that substantiated it, really can only be my projection of what the authors might have been talking about.

People have been creating their own variations of Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, since 1943 when he wrote it down. Astute readers will discern that Maslow really is saying little more than what was asserted in the Hindu Vedas, or Hebrew Kabbalah.

You can also get a pretty good idea of where people are coming from by reading Chaucer's Canterbury Tales.

Of the fact that the desires you quote are biologically programmed I have little doubt. The question arises however why when some are faced with extreme conditions, such as being taken into a concentration camp, do they continue to care for and support others whilst another fellow in their dormitory will be an informer, a thief, or a bully?

Sorry to get so philosophical here. For many years I was a psychotherapist so I know a little of human motivation and words that can change people but this issue is non-trivial.

For example, I'm pretty sure that if someone were to use No. 3. on your list: "Freedom from fear, pain, and danger" and make a website offering a palliative that failed to deliver a biological trigger would fire causing them to feel 'cheated'.

If that trigger had fired repeatedly in the past then it might even become a synaptic (biological) pattern creating what transactional analysts call a 'script'.

It's possible that those people who purchase multiple Internet marketing products promising high returns for few dollars are indeed simply exercising such scripts in others, who are in turn reinforcing self-defeating failure patterns.

To be sure the hierarchy is interesting, but more interesting will be how people choose to use the information.

Your welcome. Everyone on the warrior forum should have this book in their collection. This is literally better than any WSO or course your going to find out there as far as explaining how to market effectively and sell anything to anyone.

Also, it's like 10 bucks or so. That's prob. going to represent the best value for your money you've ever experienced as an internet marketer.

Everybody get your butt to amazon and buy this book PRONTO.

Ca$hvertising by Drew Eric Whitman is arguably the
single best $10 a marketer could spend on learning
how to "think" like a professional copywriter...

...which is to say, how to think like a BUYER.

Highly recommended as is the thread in the Copywriting
forum with an extensive list of titles on writing copy.

    Best,

    Brian
