A Question About Domain Valuation - And Selling The Domain?

Hey Guys and Gals,

I was just approached by a guy/small company that wants to buy a domain name that I have owned since 2006.

I have done nothing with the domain (not even parking) and I am more than willing to sell it for what its worth...but I'm not sure how to come up with that number??

I know the tired old saying that it is worth as much as somebody is willing to pay for it, and I've already tried to push this guy into making an offer, but he wants a price from me.

The domain is a .com and is the exact name of an iPhone application his company has developed.

Any advice from you experienced Domain sellers/buyers will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Tanner

Pick pick a number you would be personally satisifed with. Take the money and run, bearing in mind that whatver number you throw out, he will come back lower. As long as you get more than $50, you have made a profit.

What has worked for me more than once when the initiator won't make an offer. I tell them:

"If you want it, make an offer. If you don't make an offer, I'll assume you dont want it and I'll just keep it, thanks."

This almost always works for me to get an initial offer. But you DO have to be prepared for the guy to shrug and walk away.

I read an article the other day that said the average iPhone app takes about $40K to develop.

If you really want to dig into it, get info about the app, what it does, and try to track down some sales figures on similar apps. If they look good, ask for more money.

That "number" is non existent. You have to create it. There is no fixed value on a domain name, as there are dozens of variables to consider.

However, if you just want to get an idea of what the market value may be, you should do like real estate people do and compare your property to others in the "neighborhood". I like to use http://dnsaleprice.com to do exactly this. Plug in a few details, and you'll get a list of similar domains that have actually sold, along with their selling price.

      Hello Tanner.

There are a number of tools out there, but one that provides quite a bit of other supporting data with the estimation is from the EstiBot.com - Free Domain Appraisal and Domain Productivity Tools website. Check other TLDs there, also.

As with any estimator, you must ultimately use your own final judgment, because those typs of domain estimation tools can estimate well on some domains and not so well on others.

      Good Luck!

Estibot should be taking with a grain of salt...PLEASE use it for metrics ONLY not the actual sale price.

    Hey Guys,

I appreciate the responses, I do not have a number in my head for this domain yet, but the guys application has over 900,000 downloads (free version) no data on the paid version and he is currently filing for a trademark.

Also he already owns the .net version of this domain, but obviously wants the .com.

So I, may just throw out a number and see if he bites. I don't need the money, but I'm also not adverse to making money either =)

I would say .. if I forget to renew it then it would cost you about $600 to buy it in the post drop auction as an aged domain would attract attention. To verify this statement, please research buying expired domains etc. I am happy to give you a discount for $500.

Just adjust the figures to what ever amount you want. Be realistic though. I had a guy want $5000 for the .com even though I had just bought the never registered before .net as a standard namecheap buy. As he had held the domain for several years but not aged it my top offer (which was a good return on investment for him) was far less than what he wanted. It simply was not worth the price. So don't get too greedy. If you want to do business, go to the table with a reasonable offer and prepare to negotiate.

This is a tough call. I have a 4 letter domain name I've owned since 1998-99 and even the national bank of Canada won't make an offer near its worth (they own the .ca version) so unless you need the money, hold onto it. Like everything else out there, there is someone willing to pay the price.

PM me with the name and I'll give you my 2 cents evaluation.
