Question About Content When Launching a New Blog

When launching a new blog, what initial strategy do you use when it comes to content?

Suppose you have 50 articles ready to go, would you launch the site and add these 50 articles, add 10 at launch and then 10 per day for next 4 days etc or something complete different?

Also, following launch is there any advantage to adding a post daily over 2-3 per week?

You will probably get a few opinions here, I am one of those people that subscribe to the critical mass idea especially with blogs. While I don't think you need to have a huge injection of content on day one you should have a steady post rate and scale it down.

Blogs have the whole subscription factor so regular posting helps keep your subscribers coming back. So there is an advantage to spreading out the posts unless you are able to add all 50 and then still post regular updates.

I normally do something like this which would spread your 50 posts over a 1 month period.

Week 1: 3 posts a day at roughly 6 hour intervals
    Week 2: 2 posts a day
    Week 3: 1 post a day

Maintaining 1 post a day until I see the subscription base is solid at which point scaling down to 2-3 weekly posts can actually boost your readership since you will be providing more quality.

Regarding Search engines and marketing I will usually wait until there are 10-15 posts before adding sitemaps, ping lists and automatic twitter, facebook updates.

Cheers Emogen, some good tips there.

I like your approach, kick off with a reasonable amount and then slowly scale things down.

  • I'd definitely agree with the start fast and scale down.

But, the frequency depends so much on the type of the blog (and also the lengths of the posts).

I'd try and move quickly towards whatever you want your long term strategy to be. For instance, on my Internet Marketing blog, I like to post quality articles, but only once every week to every fortnight. This gives plenty of visibility to each post and opportunities for people to comment on it.

When I initially launched the blog, I was putting up content two to three times a week, just to make the blog look populated. I think that's a decent model for the IM niche.
