Are Local Business Directories dead?

I would really like to build (and pitch) a local online business directory to a local advertiser magazine that produces a free, bi-weekly rag in my small town of 35,000. I bought a pretty cool plug-in (DirectoryPress) that makes the process very easy...and I especially like that local businesses can log into the platform to create their own basic listing themselves. (It's just a Wordpress post.) My thought is that I would develop out the interface, and then offer the platform to the local print advertiser for free, and I would make my money on a variety of upsells for interested customers, such as building out ads for into a simple website, additional image inclusion, list management, etc.

The types of businesses that currently advertise in this local advertiser paper are really small, local businesses (John's Lawncare, Phil's Roofing and Siding, Barnie's Pool Service, etc.)

My question is, with all the platforms in which to advertise for free (Facebook, CraigsList, Google Local - 7 box, etc.), is there a compelling sales pitch as to why they should list for free in <My Town's> Business Directory.com... when there are other, more well-known platforms on which to get their message across?

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

as a business owner, I would love to be in every directory listing that is relevant. Yours sounds relevant.

However, as a consumer, I can't imagine I would ever use your site because google maps is my life blood...

I think small town markets would get better traffic from offline advertisements

Great points. I'm wondering if it's possible to create an online business for "micro"- markets that service only a single town. (When I type "<my town> plumbing" into Google, I get the 7-box for every business within a 20 mile radius; not just those in my town. My thinking is that if you're looking for a pet sitter who lives practically down the street, you might not want someone who has to travel 30 min. to get to your house.

So, I'm hoping to set up a meeting with the small biz owner who runs this local print advertiser magazine and do a little informational interview. Their little 12-page mag contains about 65 ad blocks priced anywhere from $28 for a 1/16 page ad to $450 for the front cover. (The mag comes out bi-weekly). What I'll need to find out is whether any of their advertisers ever express interest in online visibility. If so, this might be the leverage I need to "give away" my platform to the printer mag owner. They can then offer it as a value-added service for their business: (Place your ad with us and get a free online ad, as well. And if you want spot color, or a simple web page, or an interactive map, or additional photos or videos of your business, we can do that too.) I would only make money on the upsells.

      Any chance this could work?

These directories are actually among the most profitable. I work with a couple of different clients that do local directories and make 6 figures each year.

Excellent! I will undoubtedly check out your Directory software too (from your sig link) and consider doing some split testing. In the meantime, if there's any additional info you can provide about HOW your clients have gone about their process, I would certainly value any additional feedback. I'm assuming I'll find your contact info via your sig link so I'll try contacting you soon. Or, just PM me if its not terribly inconvenient. Regardless, thanks for replying to my post. Lately I've seen your feedback frequently on the Forum and have always found it to be extremely useful, valuable, and beneficial. Looking forward to catching up on some of your earlier threads.

I'll be happy to speak in generalities. The most common feature is these directory owners have a business plan that extends beyond the internet. In some cases, it is helping contractors connect with clients, and getting clients to the website. In some cases, it is just getting out into the community and selling placements. Additionally, they usually do a great job in making sure the listing pages are well presented for the advertisers. Some have car magnet campaigns, and one even has a billboard.

But just running the typical numbers, these local directory owners are selling spaces for $200+ per year, and selling several per week. One client I am working with now has many of their advertisers starting to renew (after one year), and finding the sales are easy, so year 2 is proving much easier, and they are expanding to a second state.

Yes, that reminds me of one of our clients. He goes around selling directory listings with the goal to always get something. Here are some examples:
      1. If it is restaurant, he get a few free dinners. Then we takes clients to the restaurant for a treat on him as he sells his services.
      2. If they sign up for a directory listing, he also sells them on a website or marketing work.
      3. He will award people as the "best of" the city 2010, and get them to put an emblem up on their window or on their website.

Basically, he walks away 95% of the time with something. It is easy to bring it up in conversation wherever he goes.

Finishing a new local-niche business directory (and plan to be huge). My directory does things that (so far) no other directory's do. It is lacking in a few places (namely, manual directory management) but I'm excited to launch in afew weeks. This has been one of my own side projects and is pretty badarse

Hopefully I'm not too late to the discussion.....I too have found a great high-end micro-niche directory need that I'm fairly confident I can get exact match domains ranked on first page of google....with very good traffic numbers.

Does anyone know of a wordpress theme that I can use where the directory would include individual listings in the middle and on the perimeter I could sell banner ads on both sides....just curious if anyone can help...

I see the local ones in my area, offering more than just a directory. I know one of the owners, and he has several, and appears to be doing more than ok. You have to be more than just a directory.

I agree with SEOGuys to offer more..actually I'd like to offer a free feature per month to each client for free.....I'm sure this will get business in the future.....it's a win/win for both of us.

New potential client gets exposure on first page of google...of course a tracking method must be included to show the new client where the new customers are coming from...

still looking for the wordpress theme....any help out there for a site like this....not looking for a directory theme though

    It depends on you.

If your local business directory is unknown in your local community, do you know who's fault that is? Yours.

If you can make your local business directory known in your town, then everyone will want to advertise there, period, because they know their customers probably know too.

And once you are known, you can charge for placement, although I like giving a free listing to everyone and an advanced listing to those who pay.

FYI: I use Directory press. Just to note I am an affiliate.

Now, to respond, hopefully without bias.

google maps: DP has 2 very good options for including maps with each listing, standard maps, or GPS positioning (interactive) maps.

The theme, as it is wordpress, has a lot of flexibility, I especially like the ease in adding custom info to forms. Such as letting submitters embed video.

As for local dying, No Way.

There are several ways to take advantage of local directories.

Personally, I started my first one, only as a lead generator, as I was going after business clients. They pre-qualify themselves by adding their free listings.

I am now selling add space. From free to full pages (80%) of the page.

Once again, I am using it as lead generation for offering SEO, and consulting services.

facebook: Since many people are not aware of one of the major differences between pages, and profiles, many of those wanting to use facebook for free, don't realized that not everyone will see their postings.

Facebook is not as freely indexed as your own website would be. You get to make the rules as opposed to following facebooks rules.

the ultimate, is to get your website to the top of google, making it the local authority site. This is a bonus for your clients. Mainly, if your clients list with you, their info is highly likely to get indexed by google, yahoo, bing, and many other sites. Yet another way for surfers to find your clients.

You may find that you are able to offer thru your directory other unique services.

You may find that you are your own best customer.

In one of my earlier directory still sites, I had trouble getting advertisers for just the directory. So, I became my own best customer, by putting my webhosting ads all over the site. Because as a directory it was continually updated, and that meant, frequent spidering and indexing by larger searchengines. So, even though I did poorly in selling ads space, I was able to get several hosting clients, because they found the directory.

The same strategy, can be used if you are a local roofer, plumber, artists, etc.

Build a local directory, and become the main sponsor.

Just a few points to consider.

Small local businesses spend a small fortune each month advertising in local papers. Classifieds in the weekly rag show the same small ads each week.

One of the pieces of advice that I give to small business website owners, is to sign up and join any directory website because the reciprocal links will help push their site.

Even without a website, directory sites are a source of leads - a surprising number of web visitors use them to search for local services.

In my area a directory site has been very successful and has promoted itself through billboards all over town - result is we all know its name (name of the town) and they have a huge following, they dominate local advertising.

Directory sites absolutely have their place.

Having a directory is one thing but having a successful directory is another.

The problem is these days papers are dying quickly and they are moving into the directory area so big competition and they have lots of money to throw at them.

There is always room for a great idea. One thing that I think is cool about smaller local directories is they tend to attract advertising from mom and pop businesses rather than chains. To me this strikes at the very heart of the spirit of marketing. You are helping people in your area to make their business something more.

What's the best Wordpress theme or plugin to use for this? I've tried all the 'business directory' type plugins for WP and they're all horrible or limited. I'm thinking of just making a new post for each business. Would that be the best way? If so, what theme(s) would you recommend? Thanks.
