Contact Page SPAM Is The Worse

Lately I've been considering removing my contact page and 9 out of 10 messages are spam. My question to WF is this: Are there any WP plugins on software that you know of that can reduce this spam? My comments are cool as Akismet takes care of that pretty well but constantly deleting spam from my contact form is becoming a chore. Should I remove the Contact page or would that be a bad thing in the long run? What's my alternatives? Please help.

I beat most of it with phone numbers.

How has using your phone number worked out for you? Have you gotten any suspicious calls as a result? What's the rest of you warriors take on using your number?

I have only got suspicious calls from a couple dial-bots, and I ID'ed those numbers as spammers and began ignoring the calls from them... Eventually they stopped calling...

How long did eventually take? I hate phone solicitation more than I hate spam.

Do you use a form? If so, you may want to go with Contact Form 7 for Wordpress and see if that helps.

I've been using it on my contact form

    Contact Us | TheUrbanTwist.com

And I haven't had any problems. My site is a Wordpress site just as yours and I get nice amount of traffic.

Thanks my man! I can't take full credit for it though. I did do a mock up off the logo myself and then I had professional designer finish me off.

I use contact 7 with a captcha which seems to get rid of all the bots that fill in forms.

    My church got that too...

I immediately told him to implement one with captcha, they did spam went down... T'ill one spammer played a funny trick.

"reply if this is the correct e-mail".

Since the guy who got it thought, it was someone with a prayer request, he responded...

Needless to say, they've now got a new e-mail for the 3rd time

The WP-SpamFree plugin has a contact page option - just add one line of code to a page (in HTML mode, not visual).

Haven't heard of that one. I don't use a CAPTCHA so that's where I might start. The funny thing is that most of my spam messages look like a bunch of jumbled text. Were these people bored. What do they gain from this?

Thanks for all the replies. I'll definitely be checking out the WP-SpamFree Plugin and adding that CAPTCHA to my form.

I agree with Quentin, contact 7 form with captcha seems to have worked well for me. It's easy to setup and you won't have to worry about any more spam.

I completely ignore image emails. Not hyperlinked is fine at instead of @ is fine, but if I can't copy and paste it I move one click to the website owner's competitor

You can simply use a captcha enabled contact forum plug in try serarching for that in wordpress.
Or you can also use wordpress anti captcha plugin if you don't want to use captcha.

It seems that WordPress's Akisment is useless to Contact Webpage Spam Actions, which is really an annoying thing for most bloggers.
Every time, when I receive a message from this Contact page, I may think I will get another good offer. But unfortunately, in most cases, I tend to get disappointed at last.

you can halve the amount of spam by requiring them to be logged into wordpress first before they can comment. Admin must approve, 1 link or more, hold in queue etc.

Contact pages work differently. You place them on your blog so that customers or potential customers can contact you by email. I get spammed through my contact pages but I've made more money since I placed them on my blogs so the spam can be happily ignored.

I was making a suggestion about the akismet post, and how to cut spam on comments. Agree with the captcha advice for contact pages. It's essential nowadays.

If I sold services via my blog it would be a different story but I don't so me having a contact form is more of a burden than anything else.

What are you warriors thoughts on going with no contact page at all? Do you foresee any negative impacts?

I don't sell services via my blogs but I have had some quite lucrative offers to advertise on some of my blogs which I wouldn't have got if there wasn't an easy way to contact me.

You got a point there! So I've decided to keep the contact page up. I'll also be adding the CAPTCHA this weekend. Thanks people!

I have my e-mail address all around the net. The way I avoid the spammers is to conceal my details in a javascript file.

It is really easy to do, you just write your details in notepad... save the file as contact.js... upload to your server, the on your contact page, instead of writing your details, just use <script src="contact.js" type="text/javascript"></script>. Make sure that it is inside your <div> tags for that page and all of your formatting will come out right aswell.

I use this regularly, it means that your customers can see all of your details, but the scrapers can't.

Note: This works on all services, not just WordPress.

    Hope this helps

Now that's pure genius. I'll be keeping that in mind as I develop future sites. As of now I haven't been experiencing any Contact Spam since adding the CAPTCHA. So far so good.
