Offline Competitive Intelligence Research - Where to Start?

I have an offline customer that wants to pay me to assemble Internet news about his competition. He wants to know new companies that are created in his industry, what they are offering, how they are marketing, how they price, etc.

He doesn't want general Blog posts, articles, press releases about his industry, just news about/from new competitors. So, a Google reader feed of Blog posts about "keyword1" "keyword2", etc. won't get it. He's in a subset of the financial industry. He wants to see links to stories about his competition. He in the US and only cares about new US competitors.

Any ideas where I could search for these on a weekly or monthly basis and how to automate the search? Ideally, I'd love to get a list of new websites created by folks in his industry also.

Is there a registration or certification companies are required to disclose? Set a Google alert for the name of that disclosure. Are they required to file any public registrations, like DBA's or local licenses? Set your alert to monitor the reporting site for new additions.

Once you are aware of a new competitor, you can monitor the standard stuff for supplemental information.
