If you Can't Get .Com Which is it .Net or .Org Place You Vote

I don't know, but lately I choose .org over ANY extension even .com and haven't had any problems. I actually from testing believe they rank faster. I had a fashion brand domain I was marketing for and I got both domains in .org and .com did exact same things and the .org surfaced faster and stayed above the .com. One of my sites which was a .net actually was beat by an .org site and I'm pretty good at getting a site ranking on first page within a couple days depending on competition and other things.

So whats your pick? .Org or .Net? and if so why?

thanks

I would say .NET is the 2nd best to use, though in the UK where I am from .ORG is commonly used.

I always go for the .net first, however from my experience it really doesn't make much of a difference. I have .net sites that do well and .org's that do well also.

I like .net as well, but I guess it would really depend on the type of site. .info could work just as well. If you are doing most of your business locally then nothing beats .com. However, if you are turley an internet business to me it really does not matter. Unless you are doing a lot of offiline marketing it should not matter what your domain ends in as most people just follow links to your site, book mark the site, and send links to their friends. For example how many times do you acutally enter in a websties address into the browser? If you are like me you almost never do. I might enter it in google and then hit the link, but I rarely type an address into the browser.

overall that seems to be my experience, but all i have are .com and .net sites right now. Why are .org's more expensive? Because its more new than .net? Just wondering. I get my domains from Godaddy, but im sure you guys know where to get them for a better price

Here in England .com and .co.uk are generally accepted to be the best extensions for local searches.

Out of .org and .net, .net appears to do better.

I don't have any clear-cut evidence of this, just from my observations .net seems to beat .org more often than not here in the UK.

If I can't get the .com I want i usually try to get a .com with a slight variation.
If I can't get that, i usually go cheap and just register with the original name I wanted with someone offering a $1.99 .info to test it out.

I've seen them both ranked in different situations relatively as expected for me. I think my opinion/perception is that .org carries a bit more credibility with it, being that many associate it with non profit organizations. Just food for thought.

I'd have to agree with you, Will. In my mind, a .org is associated with non-profits, not just anybody.

See little benefit to a URL keyword. Blue-frog.com selling 6"stiletto heel shoes is ALMOST as easy to rank as 6inchstilettoheelshoes.com

Plus the loss of people defaulting to entering .com with any offline ads, should make up the difference.

    My personal preference is .net

Why, because I don't think the TDL extension makes any difference when it comes to SEO or rankings and I think .net is by far way cooler than .org.

I would be sincerely curious what you mean by this? The commonly held belief is that keywords are important for non-authority sites. I agree with keyword-strength domains and have a certain methodology for most of my selections. I'm wondering what your viewpoint is on that? All the single-word keywords of any importance are gone (in nearly every extension) but as far as SEO is concerned, most would agree that a keywordphrase.com/net/org is an important first step.

As to the original question: I'm fairly well fifty/fifty on dotOrg vs. dotNet; in fact, I do not ascribe too much importance to the TLD at all (dotCom included). I believe it is a matter of perception in the eyes of the viewer, and what THEY believe the TLD should represent. Even dotInfo!

Even with expert analysis of SERP results comparing com/net/org, it can still be considered non-conclusive. Think: Way back in early internet, dotCom (commercial) are more heavily marketing for themselves, "grabbing all the "good" dotCom names", and pretty much began making the 'net 2.0 where we are today. They are already ranked, considered authority sites due to longevity, and just seem to naturally do well. dotOrg/Net I consider to be nearly the same, but not as heavily back-linked as a typical dotCom (less commercial intent, initially I presume).

Now, I know conjecture is conjecture when it comes to these sorts of things, so some of this is opinion of course.

My logic is this: The ranking algorithm is at best, a "black-box" sort of math problem with literally hundreds of variables that interplay off of each other, without a single variable/factor being the "silver bullet" to guarantee P1 results for any particular term. When it comes to the SERP's, if you want your site that "walks like a duck" to rank well for the term "duck", then not only must it "walk" like a duck, but it must act like a duck, think like a duck, smell like a duck, live and die, taste, breathe and look like a duck.

com/net/org? Is a blue-footed duck any less of a duck than a yellow-footed duck? I don't think it matters. YMMV and I think ANYONE is entitled to their own opinion in this case.

I think that .net and .org are incredibly close in terms of credibility and value so it's pretty much a wash between the two, though it seems like .net has a slight edge in value (when it comes to domain valuation).

If my chosen .com is gone, next I look to a different .com. If that's not available, then I think more about branding than ranking and figure out if the .net or .org sounds better with the particular name.

It also depends if you plan on flipping the site or keeping it as an authority website later on.

If you plan on flipping it, the go with .net but if you plan on keeping it and building it into an authority website, then .org is the way to go.

If it's a straight choice between net and org, then I've always gone for the .net, as in my opinion, it was the next easiest to remember after .com for the human.

I am re-evaluating this now, as a lot of people are using the .org suffix.

I purchsesd my first .org a few days ago, so I'll see how it performs, although I doubt that the search engine spiders will care too much about the suffix, compared to the content and backlinks on the site.

      Just my thoughts,

      Jeff.

Depends on what you intend to do with the domain. If you're building a business on it, I would go with .net. If it's for an informational site or a site offering free resources, maybe go with a .org.

From a SEO perspective, there is no difference.

I think it depends.... Before deciding you will have to look for semantic sense flanked by the domain. Once you become aware of more Top Level Domains this will be more and more important.

Most of the people (not all) will care but the imperative thing is to make your customers feel contented. Because of this reason you need to think before you choose .org or .net... If your website is all about a network (of sites/people etc) use .net if its non commercial/community focused] use .org

While they all have their values and minuses. However I will share with you what I know about tlds. I do try to get a .com first although if this is not available my next would be a net. However with a net it is a little bit harder to get good rankings. However with an .org site google sees this as a non profit site there for it ranks faster and with fewer backlinks then both .com and .net sites. This does not mean you should always go for a .org site just for the ranking stature but you should definately keep it in mind when choosing. I tell you one thing I want to do though is build a .mobi site I think these are going to be the next big wave. However I have no idea as to how to build a site to run with mobiles so untill there is some information out there on this we all must wait just a bit longer. I do like adam horwitzs idea to starting off with mobile though.

I prefer .ORG as it sounds more professional than a .net.

I do not think that a TLD has any effect on SERPs. Search engines need quality data and if we provide that even .info would be on the top.

.Com .Net and .Org are Top Level Domains. So,

    keyword.com
    keyword.net
    keyword.org

All of them have the 100% Density. So it really doesn't matter if you chose .net over .org or vice versa. I would concentrate more on finding an exact match domain with any of these extension.
