True about Wordpress 3.0?

I've heard that the newest version of Wordpress has been playing around with a "network" feature that would allow you to use Wordpress in a similar manner as MU - Multiple accounts, etc.

Anyone know if this is true or not? I heard lots of chatter, but then nothing. I have not as of yet upgraded to 3, but will be shortly, and have need of MU type functionality on my primary site.

Would I be better off going straight to MU, or waiting to see what comes of the network feature?

So to be sure I understand, if I wanted to give users the ability to add their own mini-sites, or mini-blogs, I could do so correct?

      Example: site.com main

      User 1: site.com/uniquelink

      User 2: site.com/anotherlink

Both would have their own unique pages, or sites that they could edit independantly?

Just making sure I'm on the same page here. Thank you for the help. Loving the sound of this so far.

Yes, you got it. And if you install this plugin WordPress › WordPress MU Domain Mapping WordPress Plugins you'll be able to assign to the (site.com/uniquelink) a unique domain name (www. newsite.com). Basically you can have multiple sites (independent domains) all managed from one WP admin only.

If you set it up correctly, using WordPress 3.0 can save
      yourself tons of time.

You get to manage all of your blogs from one SuperAdmin
      log-in on WordPress.

You can then set-up your other sites on either subdomains
or in subdirectories and even have them mapped to unique
      domains.

What's more, you can install your plugins and theme in your
Super Admin account and then activate them network-wide
at the click of a button.

      Pretty cool.

Istvan Horvarth has a great WSO out right now where he
talks about using WordPress 3.0 to the max:

Yes, it is true and fairly easy to set-up on your own.
It took me like 30min to create my own Mu site, which normally I would pay $250 so 3.0 is awesome.
You just have to change a few line of code in in php, super simple. ( I am by no mean a web designer)
Just follow the instructions on wordpress 3.0 download site.

In WordPress 3.0 the developers merged the old "regular" WP and WPMU. The result is called WP MS = multisite.

And yes, you can create sites/blogs in your network with one click - either on subdomains or in subdirectories.
Actually, there is much much more in this version

And you'd want to do this... why? (just thought you might like to explain the advantages and disadvantages of MU type installations over separate installs, with perhaps a codification addressing SEO issues and maintenance. Or maybe not).
