I've a hosting account which link to a domain, let's say mydomain.com. Since the space is not took up that much space, I am going to book another domain, for example domain2.com, and thinking whether I should get another hosting account or just stuff it up with the one I already have.

I did this a while back, but google index my second domain as mydomain.com/domain2 and domain2.mydomain.com (which is not what I fancy ) since adding multiple domain works as addon domain to my main account.

Usually, but not always, multiple domains to one hosting account.

Send an e-mail to your hosting company and ask them for step by step instructions on how to set up multiple domains: domain1.com, domain2.com, etc

Yes your second domain is added as an addon domain and should be indexed separately from your first domain. Did you add it as an addon or as a subdomain?

Sheryl, that's what I was thinking. Sounds like the OP added it as a subdomain.

A subdomain is not a separate domain - just acts as a separate site.

Add-ons are what many people use. I use hostgator reseller accounts with multiple sites on each account. That way each site has a cpanel, I have a host manager screen where I can access all sites and I can change space or bandwidth per site as I need to.

If you are doing 3-4 domains, the multiple domain package that uses addons is fine - if you have quite a few domains/sits the reseller is much better to use in my opinion.

How does using reseller hosting benefit you?
I'm trying to spread out domains over multiple IPs just so they arent all together. I don't really want to pay $30+ for SEO hosting though, what is everyone else doing here about that?

I did that as an add-on. However my second domain was still indexed as maindomain.com/seconddomain in google, instead of seconddomain.com.

However I did remember setting up a sub domain (for development), which later I follow through and purchased the second domain - which is perhaps make sense why it got indexed and confuses me.

Thanks all for helping me figure out this question. And Kay King, I never think of that. That will be a good solution when I start to grow number on websites.

      1. Go to Google webmaster tools and enter your seconddomain.com so they index that instead of the subdomain.
      2. Build some links to the the seconddomain.com.

When you use an add-on, you have to keep the TLD (.com). Your example above implies that you didn't use it and your host added it as a subdomain instead. My host does that if I forget to add the .com when creating the a domain.
