Newbie, motivated with time, looking for mentoring

INTERNET MARKETING

I've noticed that a lot of the newbie posts just say "I'm a newbie, what should I do", so I'm going to try and be more specific here, give some information, and see if any of you guys can help me.

Bio/skills:
25 years old, computer science graduate from an ivy league university, decided that I didn't want a "real" job after college, and went into the teaching field after college in order to travel. I recently quit my job, and am looking to start up my own businesses on the Internet.

I got into IM about 2 months ago, when I realized that I was tired of working in services. I've made $50-100/hour in the past doing teaching, IT consulting, and programming. But each time I was left with no assets at the end of the day, and had to start over. I also don't like being tied down to a specific location. Now I'd like to build something that will let me be free, even if I have to work a lot initially.

What I have to offer:
-Decent writing skills
-A lot of familiarity with website building (although I'm not great on visual design).
-TONS of time, I have some money saved, and want to work on IM full-time, just need a direction.
-I'm good at organizing tasks, delegating tasks, and locking into a zone and doing a lot at once.
-I'm still working on finding niches and thinking like a consumer, that can be difficult for me.

So why am I posting here? Some friends recommended this forum to me, and looking through, there's a lot of good information at hand. But I really need coaching, through the years I've learned and taught myself a lot of skills, and the process always goes faster when I have someone to help me.

Taking action is not an issue. But I want to be taking direction with guidance, in a direction that is productive for me.

What's in it for you? If I'm convinced that you can help me go in the direction I want, I'm very willing to pay well for good coaching.

I'd also like feedback from anyone who can tell me pitfalls to look out for in finding mentors, or can recommend anyone in particular who I should get in contact with.

Tman,

You seem to have a lot of background capabilities to get you started. It's just where to start.

Interestingly enough you might want to take a look at some videos that really cater to the Newbie and Beginner. Not for lack of knowledge but more on how and where to use that information most effectively and how to build a good foundation and list.

There are 3 videos, Free by the way, that you can check to see how they can get you started. It's really better to have some knowledge before hand, so that when you spend money on mentoring you won't waste time on basic things. The 3 FREE Videos
If you're already far ahead of these, then by all means move up to one of these guys below.

Once you get going on the basics and you are serious about a mentoring program and you have money to spare, I would highly recommend "Derek Gehl". His coaching program does not come cheap, but he his phenomenal.

Another one that I would highly recommend is completely different in his methods, but just as effective. And that is Michael Cheney. I don't think he charges as much as Gehl.

If you use either one of these guys would you please let them know I recommended them (I do not get any payments for recommending them, I just want them to know my appreciation for all the help they give people)

Both are millionaires and know exactly what they are doing online. And they both "over deliver"

Tim,

An honest post and a refreshing approach.

Divorcing yourself completely from the HOW (what URL's and websites you will use, what marketing and sales sequences you will utilize, etc.) my question for you is this:

If you could pick a customer audience (or several) to devote your personal gifts, geniuses and skills to, which audience(s) would you pick and what would you be 100% committed to them gaining from their association with you?

The area that I'm most interested in, and have the most to offer, in terms of experience and contacts, is the dating field. Long story short I took myself from being awful with women to being pretty happy with my relationships in a short time, and I'm passionate about helping other people improve that area of their lives.

What am I 100% committed to providing? Most products and services in this field are focused on quick sales to people who are desperate, and aren't dedicated to making sure they get the relationships they want. I want to change that.

Also, most people who get into this form of self-help start with dating, but then want to change other areas of their lives as well. I personally found IM because I saw how quickly I could improve that area, and then wanted to start building businesses. So there are a LOT of ways to upsell if you're a trusted authority.

I didn't think I'd be able to get this specific, but it's cool. Now I need some help figuring out a plan of action.

A platform is what most people are missing, but you have one. When I say platform I'm talking about your vision or commitment on behalf of the customer.

Politicians run on a platform. A set of principles that threads their communication and guides their actions - or at least ideally.

What's missing for most people is a powerful platform. Glad to see you have one - mainly because you were willing to answer the question as asked (a skill many don't exercise).

You don't need a plan of action. You just need to let your platform lead you.

Re-read that statement a few times and really let it sink in.

As humans we are hard-wired to want to know "the plan". We always want to know the "right steps" to take to "get us there faster".

Consider there is no such thing.

Think about Oprah and her massive success both personally and financially. Then ask yourself - did Oprah begin with a plan to:
- Have her own daytime talk show?
- Start her own production company?
- Have her own magazine?
- Turn her name into one of the biggest personal brands in history?

The answer to all these questions is NO. She had no plan in the beginning. None whatsoever. There were no "right steps" to take. Nada. Zippo.

All the actions and plans evolved out of her commitment to her platform - which in her case is a belief that people (especially women) can live better in every aspect of their lives through awareness and full consciousness.

So all there is for you to do at this point is turn your monologue (what you are currently saying to yourself about your platform) into a dialogue (sharing your platform with others).

What's great about this is that natural actions will occur as a result. Why? Because those actions will have to occur in order for you to get your platform out into the world.

So things like:
- Researching the dating industry to see what's being sold
- Identifying sites or individuals who share a commitment to something
- Thinking about possible products and deciding on the first one
- Setting up a website

ALL these things are what would naturally come out of a commitment to having your platform actually be a reality.

At this point a lot of people say "but Ken, that just leaves me back where I started - which is knowing which steps to take in which order?"

Again, consider there are no "perfect steps" or a "perfect order". All there is to do is be led by your platform.

Hi Tim,
reading from your post I get a clear picture that you are serious and have great amount of desire to be successful online. So i like to say that you are already ahead of lot of people because you have the right mindset. As for finding a mentor you need to read about few successful internet marketers and find out how they became successful. Once you have done that then you can approach them to learn more from them and try to model their success. This approach has worked for me in many ways. For example not only I learn the techniques and strategies to become successful online but also I stay motivated because I see the success of my mentors. There are also many free information available on strategies and ideas from articles and forums. Good Luck.

  Thanks everyone, I´m going to start taking action now, I´m on vacation at the moment (after quitting my last job), so I´ll have to do it from Internet cafes for a bit.

Woohoo, I just checked, and last week (before writing this post actually), I made my first Clickbank sale, on a conduit site promoting energy products. Now I know this is possible, just need to pick niches and drive traffic.
