List Marketing and Mail Chimp...

I run a newsletter that focuses on creative marketing and am using MailChimp as the email service provider. Now, I know all about how so many of you guys talk about how great Aweber is and all (I use them as well)and I know all about their TOS but MailChimp has just integrated a new service into their package called social pro.

What this does is snatches MORE information about who is on your list like whether they are on Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, ect. You can actually segment this data according to influence (which factors in reach of those who are signed up under you), age, social sites they are on and gender.

For instance, I know that nearly half of my list is using social media and can break it down into what they use the most.

Imagine for a second the power of this- You could actually broaden your influence by using multiple platforms for engagement targeting people that are actually interested in your brand.

At any rate, I was wondering what you guys thought about this & whether you thought that Aweber and Company will eventually follow suit.....

The only thing I see wrong with this is that people will loose interest and not be as apt to fill out the information for your list. Most people nowadays are also so scared of identity theft that they really don't want to share a whole bunch of information like that. I think just sticking with the few basics like name, email, and maybe a phone number is more then sufficient, and you will not have people clicking out of your page just because it is too much information and they are worried about their privacy.

Socialpro (and the clever little monkey) are the reason my heart is torn between aWeber and Mail Chimp... if only they allowed affiliate promotions and had a solid form designer a la aWeber, they'd make a raving fan out of me forever.

Yeah, it is pretty friggin' cool, isn't it? Social integration with list marketing. What a combination especially if you are using it for branding and expanding reach.

What I was thinking of doing is pushing my most responsive part of my list to Aweber after I integrate the social part of it.

The problem with Mailchimp is this: if you're into affiliate marketing, just forget about it. They don't approve of it, and if they catch you doing it, they delete your account. You'll lose all your subscribers. Wouldn't risk it.

Not every list marketing technique has to do with Affiliate marketing or even product marketing for that matter. It can also be a good BRANDING tool. Just a FYI.

I didn't say that was what you were doing. I just gave the information for people who didn't bother with reading the TOS when signing up. Believe me, there are a lot of people who do that.

MC is so many miles ahead of everybody else in the game that its pretty pathetic. The ONLY other two services that even come close to their functionality are InfusionSoft and Constant Contact; (both of which are over priced IMHO).

The MC API alone kicks them WAY ahead of the rest of the pack. And yes, the new Social Pro integration is a testimony to their forward thinking; as list building has/is/will be taking a SERIOUS shift away from traditional methodology DUE to the advent of the likes of Facebook, (and what's still to come).

There's really no risk involved when you incorporate the API into your list building mechanics; as you can maintain a back-up database of ALL your subscribers in real time, by using the API in conjunction with your list building.

That is true Leslie. However if you have a talk with them and have ABN etc and can show a good track record for only advertising affiliate products of value they don't mind so long as you discuss it with them to clear your name of the dump list.

            Joshua,

Could you please expand on this statement as I am extremely interested in using MailChimp, the features they offer are something I can really use to leverage my target market, but the whole no affiliate rule was a big turn-off for me, killing potential joint ventures and lateral growth in the future.

However if you have a specific checklist or strategy to show them your goodwill as a marketer that allows them to flip the switch or look away on affiliate promotions, I'd switch everything over within seconds.

            Alex.

You can always have 2 accounts especially since MailChimp give you 500 subscribers free.

I didn't know that about MailChimp. I'll have to log in and check that out. Thanks for the info.

Hey mate. There is no strategy to it I just simply went to them after doing my own products and affiliate marketing for about 2 years with results and I showed them what my customers had to say about my products and the products I promoted. Mail chimp is only looking to save it's reputation from affiliate spam offers you just need to seperate yourself from the crows e.g. 135% open rates are a good place to show that your not there to spam

              Update:

I also forgot to mention if I do any affiliate marketing it is redirected through my own domain. However I have my own rep there and I do full back Mailchimp. I have integrated it with some really cool data scraping software that allows me to find out everything about my list, which aweber just simply cannot handle. If you need any help or clarification you can also DM me or send a message to myautoresponderguy at gmail.com (please don't spam)

I think MailChimp ROCKS....I closed my aweber account about 6 months ago and have been completely impressed with mailchimp. Not only did they ad about 25 new features, they also increased the free membership to a 1,000 member list. MailChimp is awesome

I think that is a great feature. To be honest, individuals on Social sites are really NOT that concerned about privacy. If you check the kind of information that individuals provide online to those Quick PayDay Loan websites and the information provided to Social Networks and PCH and the numbers you would know that wanting privacy is kind of a myth.

We recently requested information from a marketing research firm on the kind of information that individuals are willing to provide and what level of incentive is needed to get them to give you their most personal information.

The results of the research kind of surprised us... gave me thoughts of it is not whether people will sell their soul, it just depends on how much is offered.

    OK,

I have to admit, I am confused. I have signed up with Mail Chimp and by far I think they are the best.

It's just that I sell "How To" eBooks that have to do tools to use in the MMO field and sooner or later I'll do some MMO eBooks. Not affiliate products at all, however, my own products and or MRR products.

Every time I get ready to use MC I read some Information that says I can't because of the subject MMO.

I know "read their TOS," Well it confuses me also.

A simple solution would be to ask them. I've found that when I ask reps from companies can I do this or that I never get a definite yes or no. It's just a requote of the TOS which is what has confused me in the first place.

So, True or False In your opinion

You can use Mail Chimp if you sell your own products in the MMO niche. You just can't use them for affiliate marketing.

    Thanks,

Which would be a misinterpretation again.

I took a few minutes earlier to day to bring up my concerns with a rep and I am pasting here both my original message, and the reply:

      Original Message:
We are an online publishing company, mostly creating and selling information products and homestudy courses online, and our business model involves working closely with partners to recommend their products to our customers through affiliate marketing.

There is a lot of debate on whether MailChimp supports this kind of cross-promotion, and I would like to have some clarifications on this issue before we start building lists with your service.

      Reply:
We do require that the data has to be collected through the domain that is being promoted through the message. So as long as the primary branding is from your company and you introduce the newsletter as your company saying you thought your subscribers may be interested in this product from this company then that would be ok.

      Hope this clears some confusion.
      Alex.

I use a facebook and twitter authorise software that my entire list has signed up to that I use for finding out data about my clients and for that I give them a bonus that is worth $5000+ and every one of my 10,000 subscribers has authorised me to get information from their twitter and facebook.

that sounds interesting, information is good, the more you get for the value is definitely worth while, to be honest I have never understood, the sheer overhead for the price, I can see some reasoning for say larger lists, the overhead would be much higher, but for just the average joe out there, the price just seems over kill, just a thought, it would be nice to find a service, that has a price that is just well, Right,

I looked at the price and it is reasonable which is why I decided to use them in a project, it does look like you have to have a paid account to access the API, but it is interesting, you could build an entire web app around the mail chimp server,
