A Directory of Competitors? (get extra traffic this way?)

I was talking with a client today and we came up with an interesting idea. Here is the basic plan:

Let's suppose you have a business that does Pet Grooming in Portland. So then you do the following steps:
1. Set up a link directory about Pet Grooming in Portland
2. Create a page for all of your competitors
3. Create pages for related services like Pet Food and Pet Sitting in Portland.
4. On all the pages of your site, make a big ad leading to your business
5. Further capitalize on your competition by adding Google Adsense
6. If you desire, charge your competition for advertising on the site, and don't necessarily advertise the directory was created by someone "in the business"

So in this way you get traffic from people searching for the competitors, and a certain percentage will click through the big ad going to your site.

What do you think? And legal concerns?
Thanks!

I am in the middle of a similar idea/project right now... great idea. I put another twist on and have my client use AdWords to but all of the AdSense spots If the competitors wish to outbid him in AdWords that's OK... it's my AdSense account

BTW I purchased PHP Link Directory (I own two licenses) but it's more of a website directory than one with addresses and phone numbers. I went with phpMyDirectory for this project as it seems more like a regular directory.

Not sure if you knew this, but phpLD does actually work with addresses, phone, numbers, fax numbers, google maps, etc. Here is an example detail page of a customer who actually moved away from the script you mentioned and now uses phpLD:

        I'll have to look at my phpLD again! Here is one of my sites using the phpLD script;

        Chess Link Directory

An older version that I have ignored for a few years

I might look at getting some life to it.

    hi,

You should look at what Chris Rempel is doing, I have his Mako dominator script (not affiliate link) and working on similar projects.

    Good luck

I have not seen what Chris Rempel is doing. I looked at the site, but I still don't quite understand. It seems to speak in "generalities" to me. Have you tried it yourself? Anything you can add?

I think you need to read his posts from that one onwards.

I am working with the script on a project for an online client, but I haven't won the gig yet, so will move to my second project on one of my website , I am confident that, in time , it will help me build very strong authority sites, but as for my own experiences, it's too early to tell

If you have a site that you would like to have developed using this technology, maybe we can partner...let me know.

Obviously, i think I should also take a closer look at your offering.

How did it go? Did you win the project? I can see there were a lot of replies on the Lazy Marketer blog, but none recently. Just curious if the idea ever blossomed.

Ok, yes. I read the post, and from what I get out of it, there is discussion of working with the local market. That is something we have been doing at phpLD for many years, as many of our users make local directories with our script. In the case of this thread, I was referring to creating a directory of competitors But going with your point, we have some directory owners making 6 figures in local markets.

I have done similar things for years in a niche and it works great if done correctly.

Personally I would be in favor of full disclosure. Some competitors who find out after the fact who put up the site might have a desire to retaliate for not being told up front, legally or in other ways.

Yes, definitely from an ethical standpoint one has to think about the implementation.

I would never offer to competition and charge them.....I include some competition and other related subject vendors. As an example, if I was selling used cars, I might include new car dealers as well as auto repair shops. On every page place a banner to my site on the side or bottom.

What you are getting from your competition has more value than they would ever pay you for anyway.
