Yahoo! Directory Submit Worth it?

Hey all,

I stumbled upon the Yahoo directory and it costs $299 per year to list your website. Has anybody used this? is it worth it? Do you receive many visitors?

Thanx

I have used it but not for any affiliate site ....

I used to own an ISP back in India ... and had paid Yahoo for a commercial directory listing ... got a LOT of traffic and a good Page Rank boost ...

It's been a while but I believe it would have only gotten better ...

I think it is worth a try. I would do it again if I had a company I would like to promote.

I recall reading a rumor that once you pay Yahoo to list you, they will never list you organically again. They will always expect you to pay. Not sure how well substantiated that rumor is, however.

Not true for directory listing ... They would not list you in their directory for free ANYWAY ...

As far as search engine listing is concerned ... they do list you in the serps. It was a rumor

I read somewhere that if you use yahoo canada you can submit your website for free. I read this about a year ago so Im not sure if this works anymore. I would still give it a try.

Many people use the directory solely for the PageRank it passes on. It helps in the search engines.

Traffic-wise it depends what type of website. Make sure to pick a name that starts with a number or close to the beginning of the alphabet, your listing shows up at the top and gets more traffic. (Though don't go too overboard, Yahoo editors are aware of this trick.)

If I understand this, there are two distinctly different things that are being discussed.

The directory listing (paid) is one thing. Maybe you could liken this to an offline business directory -- somewhat like a business city directory.

The other is the search engine index. Another way to speed up indexing but it will be indexed naturally. (Am I correct on this last?)

All, a directory does not equal a search engine.

If you run a more traditional SMB (small business) I would recommend paying the money to be listed in the appropriate yahoo directory category. You should also submit to other various directories, DMOZ comes to mind first.

As long as your site is in decent shape for SEO purposes it should be accepted, but as one poster said its not guaranteed. Though for all the url's I've submitted I've never been denied.

Is it a panacea? Nope, but its another brick in any SEO strategy.

    regards,

I have couple of websites in their directories. No, I didn't pay them.

If they like your site, they'll put it there for free.

Can this bring traffic? Not in my case.

Can this bring some google juice? I can say yes but of course I can't prove it.

Bottom line. I'd rather invest that $300 in research and writing quality content for my website.

Yes, anyone can get a 'free' listing in their search results, just the same as for any search engine but NOT in the Yahoo! Directory. The Yahoo! Directory is a completely different thing from their search results.

10 years ago, the only thing you needed to do to promote a site is to submit and get accepted in the Yahoo directory. You would instantly be guaranteed hundreds to thousands of visitors a day. You did not need to do any SEO in order to get traffic.

The reason was that Yahoo SERPS returned directory listings first followed by the results of their crawler (Inktomi then). However, they then altered the algorithm so that the SERPS no longer used the directory results. Since then, a listing in Yahoo directory provided little or no traffic.

My opinion is that is is definitely not worth the $299 price. Given that Google is coming hard down on directory listings, it is doubtful whether a listing provides any link juice.
