Turning twitter followers into fans/customers?

I'm building a twitter following.. which i intend to grow to around 10,000.

I'm @ 300 right now and I'll probably be at 1k within a week or so.

But i've noticed that I have 0 connection with these people.

when I see artists & celebs tweet questions & things like that & they get like a million responses.. If I tweeted a question it would probably go unanswered even if I had the same amount of follows..

and that really translates to... If I try and promote something, or sell a product, most people are going to ignore it.

so how do I open these people up? how can I get people talking to/about me?

Start by talking to them... Reply to their tweets...

Remember, the favorite topic of the average person is themselves... So talk to them about what they want to talk about -- them...

    Works great in dating too...

In the Twitter world, if you give to marketers, by sharing their info with your followers, you will make friends who in 95% of cases will try to return the favor to you...

There are a few people in there whose stuff doesn't stink, who would never consider sharing with such lowly people as you or I... Those people can generally be identified quickly, and just as quickly eliminated from your list of people to watch...

Try to make your list as relevant to your niche as possible.

Twitter is flooded with marketers trying to sell to one another. It is very easy to accumulate numbers who are only trying to sell you something, along with bots that don't even read your messages.

As well, learn to sell with a soft approach. Much of the promotional material on Twitter is so heavy-handed it really has no hope of success.

If you gather a group of followers who are actually interested in the content you are providing, you will be well ahead of most who use Twitter.

Also consider setting up a funneling system to divert your followers to an email list(s) where you will have more space and opportunity to communicate with them. This will also help you to establish authority for your chosen niche and build a better relationship with your readers.

Be wary of using software to select followers. Although an auto unfollowing process is fairly straight forward - they have either followed you within the selected time frame or they haven't - selecting followers is a lot more complex and the criteria used are often inadequate. The result is that lists built using automated methods tend to be padded with followers who aren't that interested in YOUR messages. They are, of course, interested in their OWN.

I have over 12k real (not automated) followers. I still can't measure many sales but I have made some good speaker contacts etc.

Every link I send gets about 200 clicks from 12k followers.

I don't think of twitter like my mailing list. It's not a selling platform. It's a networking one like a trade show.
