Directory Backlinks Good or Bad ?

Hi,

Does getting directory listings and backlinks still work ? There is a premium service I know about that does this, but not sure if this works very well any longer.

Thanks.

Still good, but Google isn't exactly "in love" with just any directory out there. Choose the reputable and established ones like dmoz, joeant, etc. Personally I won't bother with those that sell you on "SEO benefits", especially if they charge for listings - they have missed the point entirely. Directories are for users, not for search engines -- the ones that go by this philosophy also have more long-term linking power. Don't expect directory links to produce miracles in terms of rankings, but they do help.

I don't know which service you plan on using, but I would personally rather hand-pick a number of directories and write a good, unique description for each instead of using an inexpensive, mass submission type of service. Not sure if there are any good manual submission companies out there.

    HI

They do still work but no as good as they use to ... but if you can submit to them for free then it is still worth doing...

I've used directory result.. didn't have any problems. As far as directory links they may not pack the same punch in regards to link juice, however link diversity is important as well and it won't hurt to get these type of links.

I did an interesting experiment just last week. I wanted to test the effect of the anchor text on a site ranking in google for those keywords. The keywords did not appear anywhere on the site. I just submitted one paid link to a good pagerank directory with that anchor text. I went to #15 in one day. While #15 is not great, I just find it interesting that one link on one directory for keywords that don't even appear on the site got it to rank.

I think that directory backlinks have their place. They are part of the off-site seo process, but personally I spend more time with article submission, do-follow blog commenting, etc.

I have found that off site SEO should incorporate multiple methods for gaining links. Overly depending on 1 or 2 can be limiting. Google is getting pretty good at finding methods that produce lots of low quality links. The good thing about directories (or some blogs) is there is an approval process.

Some will help, most will not...

The real question should be whether those directories have traffic, because a directory that will send you traffic can be more powerful than the link pop value for influencing Google...
