You Tube, etc: Don't put all your eggs in one basket

While I was on vacation in Switzerland, I logged into my G-mail using my brother-in-law's computer and my friend's hotel's Internet. For some strange reason (I've logged in from Switzerland in other years, and also Singapore, Austria, UK, US, and Bali) this time Google thought it was a suspicious activity. To protect me, they suspended my Google account until I could verify it.

OK, not too big a problem. Within a day I had verified and got my account back online. However, try watching any of my videos on the KevinRiley account at YouTube and you'll see "This video has been removed due to terms of use violation." Lovely! Seems the account got wiped out and my request to Google has so far been ignored, lost, or shuffled off to oblivion.

Does this affect my business? I'm sure there are some lost sales, and it affect a few streams of opt-ins, but overall ... not really. It's an annoyance, and a loss of some pretty cool videos I've done over the years, but since my business doesn't rely on this one source, it's not affecting my business adversely.

MORAL: Do not put all your eggs in one basket. Do not rely on one property which you have no control over - YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Blogger, Squidoo, etc.

    • LOL, I wish I could, but I'm way too busy. Started writing The Clockwork Manifesto in Switzerland. This will be my magnum opus, so it needs a lot more work yet.
  • I think this sums it all up

  • Crap man, that really sucks. Great moral that you were taught...which I'm sure you already knew lol. At least your bad fortune may help the next poor unfortunate soul.

  • I heard lots of bad things about Google. So I will definitely go other ways to build my business online.

    Thanks for sharing.

    • It's not so much about going the other way, but learning to play by their rules. Even if you have to learn them the hardway, or in this case the easy was, as we did not have to suffer it directly.

Kevin gladly took one for the team.

  • Sorry to hear about your Youtube disaster, Kevin. Google can get really heavy-handed at times with accounts (and obviously this includes Youtube too since they now own it) especially when multiple IPs are involved. I'm sure this mishap probably had something to do with you logging in from multiple IPs all over the world within a short period of time.

One way to get around this issue would be to use a VPN (virtual private network) with static IP; this way you'd always appear to be logging in from the same IP no matter where you are. They are fairly inexpensive these days, and if you're concerned at all about security (which you should be, especially if you're traveling and connecting to open, unsecured wireless networks) this would ensure all your data flowing in and out of your computer is encrypted.

    • This is a good lesson. I think the big Ezine Articles shake up last year taught a lot of people this lesson as well. And I know many people that lost their Google Adword accounts and still have not fully recovered, or they are still not at the income level they were. In IM you need 4 to 7 streams.
  • Sorry to hear the bad new.
For most of us it's still one of the way to get our link (hopefully) out there, so we still need it but will look for other sites as well to prevent it happening to us.
  • I love how you are so calm about it, and thats because it was only one of many eggs in one of many baskets. I guess for us newbies who have been told follow through with one thing this is also a tale of caution as far as backing up etc. Make sure to limit your down time because you only have the one or two baskets.

Inspirational none the less Thank You Kevin.
  • I also love that Kevin has a good attitude about it and is not turning this into some enraged anti-Google rant.

I see people on here all the time who are furious because their paypal account got suspended, adsense account got suspended, whatever - whether because they screwed up and violated TOS or because paypal or Google was overly zealous about something like clickbombing.

Ranting about the problem doesn't accomplish anything except raising your blood pressure and making you miserable. The way to solve that problem is to calmly and politely communicate with Google or Paypal and be persistant, and patient, until the problem is resolved. Either way - it's going to take the same amount of time to get it fixed, so you might as well spend that time being calm and planning new ways to bring in income, rather than being furious at a giant corporation which deals with millions of people every day.

Yes, it sucks to lose sales because Google or Paypal or Amazon or whoever made a mistake, but again, as Kevin points out, it is never smart to have all of your income depend on a business that you have no control over.

And since it would be unlike me to join in a Kevin Riley thread without descending into juvenile humor - hamsters, whiskey, and green mankinis. That's all I have to say.

    • I'd rather rant about important things, like putting pearl onions in Martinis or calling Bourbon or Rye a good whiskey.

  • "LOL, actually, the worst part is that I lost my playlist of favourite music videos."

Ahh Ha! That could explain the TOS issue?
    • [1] reply
    • Definitely. With my taste in music, I would not be surprised. Probably my addition of the Muppets' version of "Fxxx The Pain Away"
  • Hi Kevin,

Sound advice. I intend to promote more of my videos on different networks after hearing your story.

    Thanks for sharing the reminder.

You know, just to spell that out.
    • [ 1 ] Thanks

  • Kevin, I am surprised you had to learn this lesson the hard way... I had to learn the hard way last year, and I always thought you were smarter than me... LOL

That will cut deep in some circles CD...

This is the same problem article marketers fear with ezine, or bloggers fear with worldpress/blogger.com. If they go under, or you're barred from using them, holy cow years of work could evaporate quickly...
