I think you'll find most hosts penalize you if you come back after missing a payment. Most keep your files for a period of time after you stop paying and the charges cover this.

Ha ha ha, yes, that's it with Hostgator. You got to
pay for the time they "hosted" your details, even
    if just your login details,

So you broken your agreement (http://www.hostgator.com/tos/tos.php) with them by not paying them without properly cancelling, and now you're annoyed at them?

    Good logic.

Did you fill in this form:

    https://secure.hostgator.com/cancel.php

    Before you stopped paying?

I think it's reasonable if you expect the same hosting account with all your files remaining. If you don't want to pay it then start over with a brand new hosting account. You can't expect a company to hold onto and host your accounts for the last couple of months for free.

Nope. The agreement you made with them before you signed up with them outlines their cancellation policy in full.

You can't sign up to HostGator (or 99% of hosts for that matter) without saying that you've read and agree to the ToS.

In short, it might seem annoying (I've been in similar positions myself), although think of it from the perspective of the host - a customer agrees to fill out a cancellation form if they want to cancel. Then instead of doing this, they simply stop paying. From the host's perspective this clearly isn't desirable (nor does it honour the agreement), hence the host is then within their rights to charge more, remove the files from their system, etc.

As I say, I can understand that it might seem annoying. But it's more annoying to the host

I'd suggest that you simply move to another host. Might be better for both you and HostGator

Were the files you were hosting there available to you? If I had typed the url in a browser, would I have seen the website? Are you simply wanting to pick up where you left off when you stopped paying?

If the answer is 'yes' to any of those, I'd say the charge is entirely reasonable. If the answer was no, call them on the phone. Speak to the sales department, not billing. Tell them your story in a calm fashion, and ask if they can either just start the meter over or set you up with a new account. I've always found them to be friendly and accommodating if you are reasonable.

On the flip side, without your cancellation notice, how would they know you deliberately stopped paying?

I recently made some changes in my banking, so when my account came due, PayPal didn't have the funds available and the backup accounts were invalid. Rather than canceling my account and dumping my files, they let me slide until I got things straightened out.

If you can talk to them calmly and without accusing them of doing something tricky to bilk you out of peanuts (to them), you might be surprised at the slack you'll get...

Yep, agree with the others. If you didn't follow the proper cancellation procedures then you really only have yourself to blame.

I had account at hostagtor for a month then I didn't pay
So you basically reneged on your agreement with them. Can't see what your complaining about really.

    Magic,

Did you actually bother to read Hostgator's TOS?

They have a specific process you must follow if you want to cancel you account, and it is spelled out IN DETAIL in their terms of service. You can't just stop payment.

Did you follow their procedure? I think not.

When you ask, "What's up with that?" well, now you know.

    I hope this helps.

Think about it this way. You rent your house out. The person renting from you decides to go away for 2 months and not pay for those 2 months because he was not there (your logic), but all his belonging were there. You wouldn't charge him the two months of rent because he wasn't there but his belonging were there?
