Can I beg You For a 2 Minute Favor?

The favor has to do with navigation on one of the sites I am developing in the fishing industry.

Before I make the navigation (categories at this moment), to complicated for the causal visitor I thought I would ask you guys to put your "visitor" hat on and give me some input.

First I want to add navigation for direct information about fishing maps in a geographical style and also for lake fishing conditions/reports.

I need help from you on "how" you expect to find that information from the navigation bar.

Would you most likely be able to find it (drop down menu) from the Hot Fishing Spots category or would that be better to access the information from its own top level category navigation. Or do you have a better idea because I only have so much space before becoming lost in the clutter?

You can access the site in question at: http://anglersfishery.com

    Hi!
You wrote quite a lot and that took a moment to understand what is your question.

But OK, i did checked your site, what I think is that you should not use a drop down menu, at least not in a way how it is a the moment, because after I chose something from the upper row, then I cannot see other rows, I think it is not too clear from view of visitor.

Maybe you can leave that drop down menu in a case you would have just one row from which other menus come out!

Debra, are you intending to sell fishing maps? If so, I'd put them as a subcategory under fishing tackle.

Fishing reports/conditions is a hot topic for anglers and should probably get it's own menu item.

One thing puzzles me about this site. Why is the content all over the board? In visitor mode, I take a quick look, decide it's whack, and clear out. In IM mode, this looks like an autoblog, pulling content from a variety of feeds without much concern for how they fit together.

Just on the front page, it looks like you have feeds from Yahoo Answers or one of its cousins, news releases from PR Web or Google News or something, maybe a feed from an article directory or two, and then the product feeds.

Slipping back into visitor mode. As someone who has been an avid angler for going on 50 years, I'd look at this site and guess that the site creator knew very little about fishing and cared even less.

Might be harsh, but you asked for opinions...

You have give me a LOT of help here.

It is a mix of everything of multiple sources. Some original and some not. Some will stay and a lot will go.

You are right that I don't know how to think like a real angler. My experience, although I love fishing, is very ameteur. I bait the hook, throw it out in the water, wait for a bite then yank it. While I'm screwing that up half the time, I'm enjoying the scenery, tranquility of peace, sounds of nature and the idleness of my thoughts. As backwards as it sounds...I Love It.

        Anyhow...

I added to many directions to focus on. From watching the stats and following the reactions of the visitor, it looks like the majority see the site as freshwater fishing. That is what I am retargeting the site for, everything else goes.

Because I am such an ameteur fishing gal (and I say that lightly), I want to figure out the way avid angler organizes themselves. Where they think everything fits into place.

I figured that starts with navigation. When I get the site navigation right for the freshwater fisherman then everything else goes and the focus begins. When I get that right...the site will grow and so will I.

And btw...I do care, that's why I asked.

The content everywhere. Well, that's the template and it's only the home page. I understand your point though. I just need to find the logical medium.

The site was originally (and still is) meant to be a remesh, user stories, and events, grouped together in one place and easily accessible. I haven't focused on sales and probably won't. Just strictly information on fishing, the who, where, when and how. I will soon want to incorporate profiles for Charters, Lodges, and Guides.

In fishing tackle...hum...I can do that. Gives me some direction. I'm still trying to figure out the difference between fishing tackle and fishing equipment. It's all the same to me.
