You could make money at the same time you build a list.
For example you can use your Thank you page to offer
some affiliate product.

Sure you can make money while building a list. You're giving something away for free to build a list right? You can set it up something like this:

Message 1 - Introduction about you
Message 2 - Give more valuable information away for free
Message 3 - Get them to take action... encourage feedback on a particular related subject... could be to comment on your blog post or answer their question/s.
Message 4 - Introduce an affiliate product (include a free bonus)... direct them to your blog that will give a video demonstration of how the product works and what you think about it.
Message 5 - A personal message from you (not selling anything)
Message 6 - Give away something else for free...

Here after, you should have build up enough trust to really make some good money, all while building a list.

Many products have affiliate resources which include free giveaway ebooks which promote their main product, you could use one of those.

Just create a squeeze page offering the ebook and have your visitors redirected to the main sales page once they submit their information.

Some programs also offer ready made email pitches messages too, just plug them into your autoresponder.

Doing that will give your subscribers many opportunities to buy the product you're promoting, making you money and building your list at the same time.

You could set up a system like this in a few hours, then you just need to concentrate on getting the traffic.

You can make money while you are building the list, by marketing products to the list while it is being built.

If anything, you don't want to sell nothing to them for an entire year, as they will get used to just getting free information from you.

Another option you have, and this is a debated topic - is build a list of 500 buyers instead by selling direct and forget opt in e-mails altogether.

Then you are getting paid to build the list, and a list of 500 buyers will usually be worth more than 5,000 subscribers.

Yes, this is possible. What you can do is offer an OTO.

So, here is what you can do...

After someone enters their email address to their squeeze page send them to a page that says at the top "Thank you for subscribing, please check your email in 10 minutes to access your free download, in the meantime check this out..."

or something along those lines.

Then show them your offer or an affiliate product. I normally use an offer that is worth $47 or more and offer it for $9 to $15 depending on what it is.

Also, someone mentioned using affiliate products on your download page, that is a good idea too and works depending on the product.

Making money from your list WHILE you build it should be one of your main priorities.

When I'm building a new list, I build the autoresponders for the very first subscriber, like i was doing it just for him/her... after that, it's all about testing and tweaking because all the new subscribers will experience the same basic thing. Think of your list as a PERSON, not an email list... and you should make sales, and have no trouble finding ways to enrich the lives of those PEOPLE that signed up for your stuff.

Yes, you should go ahead in this way. Make money from your existing list and at the same time grow your list size day by day.
This is the best practice.

Here's how I would make money AS I build my list, if I wanted to
(and yes, I use some of the methods listed here, though not all):

1. Make an offer to give a free gift (or many) when subscribers
sign up to your list... and build up anticipation, so they look
forward to it, and will read/watch/listen to it soon.

2. On the page they are redirected to after filling in the form,
do what @b.super13 said in post #17 above

3. I use double-optin, so on the re-confirmation page (which is
where subscribers go when they click 'CONFIRM'), make another
offer - along with a link to download the free gifts

4. In message #1 that goes out to confirmed opt-ins, welcome your
new subscriber - with an extra special 'one time only' deal

5. In the free gift that you give (usually a valuable ebook as
a PDF), include affiliate links for related products, another
special deal, and a pitch for your primary product or service

6. If you like the idea, sell banner/space ads on the 'thank you'
page which new subscribers arrive at after opting in

7. If you like the idea, negotiate list building JVs with others
in your niche - and host THEIR opt-in form on your 'thank you'
page in exchange for getting paid per lead they generate, OR
as a reciprocal deal for placing YOUR form on their site

8. Sell ad space (as classified ads or even solo ads) in the
autoresponder sequence that will go out to your newly built
list (you can do this BEFORE you build your list!)

9. Ditto for ad space or text ads placed within the freebie
you are offering as a gift in step #1.

10. You could display Google Adsense (or other per-click payment
links) on any of the pages along the process

11. If you EXPLICITLY make it clear on the opt-in page, you
can even sell or rent leads to advertisers - for a fee

12. If you EXPLICITLY make it clear on the opt-in page, you
can sell your entire list once it hits a certain size - and
then start over again!

I hope some of these ideas help you stretch your imagination
beyond the standard 'one time offers' or 'thank you page ad'.
