How to best Monetize a site with decent traffic?

by mrpals
40 replies
I would like some advice on alternate ways to monetize a site that gets about 150,000 visitors a month and a shade over 250,000 page views per month.

I know that isn't much but hoping to find some decent alternatives other than using CB and google ads to help cover server costs.

What you can do is go to AdBrite: The Internet's Ad Marketplace and list your site. Like RatRaceWinner said, banner advertising is probably your best bet with that kind of traffic you receive on your site.

Does adbright pay pretty well? I have also heard about text link. Or maybe some way to sell our own. I know nothing about making the money with sites but there has to a be a way.
Dedicated server is eating me out of house and home.

Adbrite pays decent. Online Advertising Marketplace | BuySellAds.com is pretty good too. You can check them out.

There is a plethora of ways, and you can use multiple ways at once if you like! I prefer an optin form, as these are ever-renewable sources of income(If you treat them right, that is.) There is also adsense, but I do not recommend that over any other source. You can also contact other sites and offer on your site for them for money, or even use a clickbank affiliate offer in the sidebar or in posts! If you want to do sponsored reviews, go ahead! Just make sure they are good quality first.

In textual links pay less than any others in my experience..

Have you also thought about building up an 'opted in' email subscription list, and then marketing affiliation products to the subscribers?

Looks like you've got adsense up. You should see some revenue from that.

As a matter of personal experience, I haven't had great success with the link units, but I would just make sure you keep track of which units perform the best.

I have each of the adsense units on channels to track them. I use to not have the banner at top or in the side bar, but google sent me too letters and wanted me to put one in each of those locations. They said it would increase but actually decreased the earnings.

First off, I must say that is some nice traffic you are getting. The first thing I would do is start building a list to market to in the future. Second, I would recommend that you put up relevant CPA offers on your site with banner ads. CPA is much better than Adsense because you can get a much higher CPC.

Put links to products that are impulse buys being that the traffic isn't that targeted and you're basically reaching people who are in the mood to goof off.

Where would one locate such products that you speak of? I am running a logo creation contest the first of October and should double traffic so if can find some good products to add during, it would be great.

It means Cost Per Acquisition. There are "CPA" networks that have advertisers who will pay you a flat fee for an action that a user takes on their site.

Example: you place a "Insurance Quote" ad on your site. You don't make any money if someone just clicks it, but if they click it and fill out a form, you can make some good money.

There are some leads that will pay good money (mortgages, insurance, debt relief, etc).

        Head over to the Forum:
Ad Networks - CPA, CPM, CPL - Millionaire Makers - Would've posted a link, but don't have enough posts yet

        for info on adnetworks

Thanks for the info, I will look into those. I tried your site in firefox and works fine. I will try to come up with some funny and weird stuff to put on there.

Should I make a group or something for weird news? Like a category or something so the link to that group shows up top?

Yeah give them a try. I made some good money with Chitika already with other projects I run.
You can make as many groups as you wish The sky is the limit. If you have news that you think could work let me know then I will create a catergory for that.

Purchasing ads on my site would depend on the niche you are in as to if my visitors would be interesting in clicking. My site really is in no niche other than weird news and funny stuff.

By December I should have it well over 500,000 visitor per month so maybe the numbers game will work then.

    Hi

On a few of my sites I use GoViral - GoViral - Branded Content Distribution - and they pay me every time someone watches a video from my site.

They have a Syndicated Player code that you can insert which displays the latest video ad campaigns. The ads are quite quirky so I get a fair few clicks.

Payment is around 5c per view which doesn't sound much but it soon adds up.

    David

PS - I am not affiliated with this company, just use them on a few sites.

That sounds pretty interesting, What kinds of video do they have?
Also would I need to embed their videos or they have banners?

I won't embed from other sites as it tends to create too many calls server side. At peak times this site can pull 3,000 visitors in a single hour and as much as 12,000 page views durning an hour. So the advertising would need to be JS based where I can place querry in the footer.

JS can not run dual in parallel because it freezes page loads so by placing the querry in the footer the page will load and the js can open 1 at a time without slowing the page down.

Maybe that was to much info.

They are mainly geo targetted advert videos. Advertisers range from Renault to LG Mobile.

You can see an example at Fantasy Footy League :: Free To Play Fantasy Football League and at the log in page also.

You have to embed the code for the video to display on your site - simple JS code, banners won't display the videos.

If you only have room in your footer then it may be no use. That also may be the reason your revenue is low as well, simple footer ads don't cut the mustard - you need to display ads amongst the content of your site.

Along with this, I think site needs redesign to be more convenient easier to read. I came to visit it and it was really tough to undertand what to read and where. Too much text.. Add borders to content boxes, more pictures would look good. This would help get more pageviews too.

Congrats on growing a big site tho, mrpals! Good job!

Sorry, I didn't mean put the ads in the footer, I mean place the js querry in the footer and let the ad load in normal place. Have the Jquerry in the footer just helps pages load faster.

One thing you can try is to set your Adsense ads to show only text, no images.

In some cases this increases the CTR, because people tend to have a more acute "banner blindness" when it comes to images as compared to text ads.

If you do this, try to customize the colors of your ads to match your website.

I am in agreement with you about the text links, As a 3 month test I see a major difference in the CTR of text compared to image. Thanks for reminding me of that.

I have thought about that but really don't think people would be willing to pay for a laugh. That would be sweet though just to get 1 buck a month from visitors. I could be a fat cat then and maybe buy some new shoes.

Hey mrpals, one of the most important things you should know in this industry is to always be testing. Always test different offers or techniques to try to figure out what would give you the highest EPCs.

We have a bunch of campaigns that should do well with your traffic. Contact me, and I'll do my best to help monetize your traffic.

    Thanks!
