How to handle a new site

This may seem like a really dumb question but I am new so here goes.

If you have your domain and host already and are expecting to be 1-2 weeks until the actual site goes online, should you wait to try and drive traffic and ranking or go ahead and get something up there to get started with some kind of blog page or something?

Would this be a waste of time and ultimately detrimental to the actual site?

Thanks for your help!

In order for your to have backlinks and entice your visitors you should start with your blogging, forum posting, and bookmarking to increase your Page Rank.

I start putting up content asap. My advice throw up a one-pager, an article or something keyword rich, start building links to your site immediately because it will take a week or 2 for them to start getting indexed and appearing anyway.

I wouldn't want to send traffic to a site that wasn't ready yet. They're sure not going to come back.

OK, so the responses are divided.

Here was my thinking. I am new so tell me if I am completely wrong.

What I would be trying to accomplish is simply rankings in the search engines. There would possibly be a few people who find the site but overall, I am trying to get it up there so it will already be indexed and easier to find in a couple of weeks when the completed site does go live.

I was thinking for now, just put up a wordpress blog and and best teaser content I could come up with. When the full site is ready, take down the wordpress and put the real one up.

      Any problems with this?

If your site is going to be ready shortly why not just wait till its done?

I was just hoping that anything done on it would help with traffic later.

Well, that and just waiting for something has never been my thing.

If putting up some pages with something on them until the site is up doesn't help, that is ok I just didn't want to do anything that would be detrimental to the site late.

          Thanks.

You are completely wrong. There, I told you.

You can't rank a site that doesn't exist and has not yet been indexed (because it doesn't exist).

What you can do is spend time writing some articles on the topic so they ready to submit once the site is online. You can be looking for - and joining - forums in the niche. You could be writing autoresponder messages to load up if you are going to build a list.

You can be writing more posts/articles/content to add to the site once it is online.

In other words, you can spend time positioning yourself and preparing for promoting the site.

Dear April: I don't want any trouble from you.
January was long, February was iffy, March was a freaking dumpster fire.
So sit down, be quiet, and don't touch anything.

I don't think there is anything wrong with your first step. Take action and focus until you reach a certain unique visitors that you want and keep working up from there.

You might as well wait until your site is fully done. If you put up a wordpress blog, write articles and start building links to the blog, then take it down all of your work would go to waste. Your links you got to your blog are only useful for the pages that are still up and running, but as soon as you take them down the links will be lost.

I agree with kay king, write your articles/blog posts now and just keep them until your real site has launched then post them. There is no rush to get your site indexed especially if it's not completed yet.

Good luck with your website launch, hopefully all goes well!!
