Unique Idea? - You CAN steal it if you want. Whats your thoughts?

One of the warriors here the other day mentioned that he bought his child a website for his/her birthday. (Okay not entirely my idea, but I can't remember who it was)

This got me thinking, Instead of the latest toy gadget etc Why not create a service where you create websites for people to give children as a Birthday gift.

The parent lets you know what the Childs passion is and you build the site on that. Now lets us say child's passion is horses. You build the site on horses do some keyword research for a decent traffic keyword domain name and build the website or Blog.

Simple enough would it sell for $150? I think not ..... But

What if along with the website you made a step by step guide on how to update the website change it and introduce the child to basic SEO keyword research etc using their site. This tutorial can be very picture based with fun cartoons.

When you put the first content on the site purposefully make
mistakes, and formatting glitches that the child needs to fix themselves (step by step in the guide). These mistakes will teach the basic of posting and site editing.

To make this very easy insure that the layout for all the websites is the same, I would suggest Wordpress and make the tutorial fun and informative.

Now when you are selling the concept to the parents you tell them that it is a fun site that will teach the child how to design their own website. At the same time they are concentrating on language and grammar skills etc.

Then you create a challenge for the child where you tell them the keyword you chose and why you chose it. And now if they can use the SEO skills in the tutorial see if they can get to number one for their keyword (make it a game).

You tell them if they write a nice journal or story every day using the keyword, and do a few other things they can use Rank checker to see how they are progressing and can soon be number one or at least in the top 10.

When they reach the first page you can have another 'Sealed' eBook or folder that says 'Do not open until you have reached at least position 10'.

Here you start teaching them to how they can make money with their site adding Adsense to the site promoting eBooks etc. Have stories of other children and young teenagers that make $XXXX a month. Get them motivated by showing them how their passion can make money.

I believe many parents would buy this( I Know I would) as it teaches their kids a valuable skill in a fun way that can make them real money. As an offline product I think it could be very easy to sell, and maybe as an online membership instead of a once off payment.

What are your thoughts?

Really neat out of the box idea, Cathy. If you position this correctly and market this to ambitious parents who want their children to succeed in everything, you could probably sell a ton of these!

I think it's a brilliant idea (maybe for some Wordpress designer?), though maybe you might have to market them at $47 or something?

Or, you could tie it in with something like a Hostgator affiliateship and nearly give it away in exchange for people buying hosting with your affiliate link (which is worth quite a bit, I think?). Maybe that's the way to go.

Mind you, it's been on the board for 2 hours now, so several people will already be doing it! :p

Why does everyone talk about a hostgator affiliateship?

Personally, I would rather open up a reseller account and have them host it that way. It's monthly profits that way, unless I am missing something about hostgator affilitships?

I think it is because the commission is decent and it is easy to give away a "free" product that makes good money.

Cathy I REALLY like this idea and I believe I will pursue it. I am actually working on a video tutorial series for WordPress more geared towards marketing, but I think a fun infoproduct would be a WordPress for kids! Might not be for some time as I'm quite busy nowadays, but I think that this is a real fun spin on doing something fun (and very long-term results) for kids. Teaches business, technology, and design Very nice.

    Great Idea,

having sold lots to this market myself, I encourage you to think PERSONALIZATION

    so

    SuzysHorseSite.com
    JonnyLovesFireTrucks.com

make sure the kids name is big in the header, etc

also, depending on the demo...it is worth a LOT MORE than $150

you can probably throw some residual on the hosting...sorry the buzzword these days is "continuity"

and depending on the age of the child, you might be able to do some upsells on functionality.

My niece has been asking me to make her a website...with her name, and games for girls, and a blog.

Her grades will determine WHEN she gets it, but she is gonna get it.

Both my kids have sites, the oldest who is 7 writes stuff for it and I help him with the tech: www.elliotlongworth.com

The youngest is 5 and is only really interested in what games I can add to it for him - Oliver Longworth – Micro Blog - but they are both very aware that they have sites and Elliot has earned a few pounds from Adsense. Not a lot, but at least he is aware that the more he sits and writes new stuff for his site, the higher the earning potential will be.

It's definately an in demand thing because their aunty asked me to do one for their cousin and one of his freinds parents paid me to do one for their kid.

Just be careful not to let any personal details be put on there and make sure you have some good tutorial videos to show them that not only cover how to use Wordpress but cover security etc as well.

David, I'm not sure if I'm doing the right thing asking this question in the thread (apologies to op for butting in) but your son's sites are lovely. Where did you get the games from? My daughter has a site and wants to put some games on it but I haven't a clue how to go about it.

No problem, I have a games site - Wicked Web Games - Free Games to Play Online. - Cool Online Games - and for each game you can grab the code and post the game in your blog, just make sure you are in the html bit, not visual when pasting the code in.

Actually, I was on Skype with a guy this summer, who lives in Australia and with his partner has developed a program that walks teens through building their own blogs and monetizing them. Well done, as his videos really speak to teens in a very good way. I promoted it before I left on my Swiss vacation, and when I returned, he sent me a video of his young daughter (not quite a teen yet) seeing her Adsense results and getting excited. Pretty cool stuff. A great way to get kids interested in entrepreneurship.

First of, I think it sounds like a brilliant idea. I would absolutely emphasize on the educational value of owning a website. Like learning how to write grammatically correct in a fun way, maybe you could have some kind of virtual cartoon figure or something that pops up and tells the kid how to write correctly if something is misspelled. How computers is getting more and more into the future of a school day, and how this can give kids a kick-start is also a strong selling point.

I would however say that your biggest obstacle would be to implement something that actually secures the kids and convinces the parent that there kids are safe from "bad guys". The internet has a pretty dark side as well. you know?

Secondly, I am still in LOL-mode after that first reply

Maybe everyone else has a different experience with kids than I do, but I'd be worried about the kid's attention span.

Ya they might find it cool for a few days, but what about in 6 months?

When I was that age I didn't do anything consistently for very long. Even TV shows became boring after a short while.

I liken it to playing the piano. The parents think it's a great idea, the kid will be glad they learned it EVENTUALLY, but most quit way before they ever see the benefits, because right now it's not fun.

How do you propose to keep the kids interested in the blogging process?

Thank you for the thoughts and ideas. I really think this will work some of the concepts you guys brought up I never even thought about.

    - Here are some: safety security and privacy. (big factor)

-Attention span of children, I thought doing it on a childs passion and hobby will take care of this. But as was said kids can change their minds very quickly.

Different monetization options hosting etc. I like it.

    Great idea Cathy!

If someone does this they may want to check the TOS's and federal and state laws if they monitize the site. Many affiliate programs have TOS age restrictions. I have seen some say "over 14", "over 16", and "over 18". I don't know how federal and state laws may apply but it couldn't hurt to investigate.

This reminds me of some of the people online making custom birthday "Newspapers" on the birth of a child.

You could just have a simple site that has a phone number for people to call and tell how much they love the particular child... (You can use instantaudiogenerator for this)... Then you take the audio files and place them on the web so the child can hear all the nice comments from family and friends...

This way you don't have all the headaches of trying to teach web stuff to a child or their parents and STILL sell them a unique web gift.

Here are some more ideas from another thread I have here on the forum:

It is a cool idea, though one that will always appeal more to the parents than the kids... kinda like those piano lessons...

I also think its for an older age range, say teenagers as they sure appreciate earning their own cash...

In fact, Dr Evoy of SBI fame has long advocated getting your child a website as a way of instilling positive values and self worth in your children. As well as teaching them valuable lessons about enterprise, creativity and work.

Great thread! I believe I was the warrior who originally posted that I'd bought my 7 year old a website for his birthday! (It was in one of Caleb's threads - maybe the one where he celebrated his 1000th post?).

The Security Issues are a definite issue - his site was hacked by some religious zealots and had to be nuked. And didn't have a back up!!! (Grrrrrr - important lesson though.)

The biggest problem at that age is actually getting him to sit down and do stuff on a regular basis. Being a 7 year old he often wants to do THREE POSTS NOW, DADDY, NOW, PLEASE. And then he's not bothered for weeks.

And to be honest we've not done much with it. But we made £30 the other day, so he was quite pleased with that. And he sees me 'doing my thang' and is beginning to form some kind of understanding of what's going on. He often asks how many books I've sold today and questions like that.

So it's definitely an interesting experience - and he's pretty savvy on the INternet for his age, some times a bit too savvy. So if anyone is going to run with this idea they need to be careful about what their child might get exposed to.

Be interesting to keep an eye on this...

Could you spin this into a kids membership site? May provide a bit more security? Doesn't necessarily have to be a paid membership. I would imagine kids like to feel that group thing, exclusivity, ability to share with other kids, etc.

  • yeah I love that idea. I imagine some dad in the 90s thinking up a cool domain name for their kid: "How about www(dot)funnywebsite(dot)com?" haha.

Most of the best guys started out with this stuff at a young age anyway, I know I started my first website when I was 12, back when I could probably have bought the domain "soccerinformation(dot)com" without much trouble.

Brilliant idea Cathy. Why don't you find an interested party (like dv8domainsDotCom) and partner with them to do it. Could be a lot of money to be made - great untapped niche idea.

That was also what I was thinking with a Moderated forum if it became big enough. It would be fun.

Having said that I am learning every day and getting pretty good so you never know.

Might keep their frisky little minds interested when the kids get their friends to get a site too and they can then post to each others site. Of course the little capitalist will make a commission from you for sending his or her friends to get one. Can you imagine any youngster having something that their peers do not. Even brothers and sisters or maybe you could offer a family site.

Also might want to consider hosting the sites for a monthly charge if you have a reseller hosting account. You could emphasize that maybe by having their own sites and teaching them the importance of site control might be a better atmosphere than spending time on some unmentioned social sites which may have a bad influence.

And Gramps and Granny could visit the site to wish them happy birthday and family gatherings could be announced. Lots of potential for positive sales messages.

Yes it would seem to have potential.

brilliant idea, did I say brilliant idea? The only thing mom likes better that seeing her name in "lights" is seeing her son or daughter's name in "Lights!" I think moms would be real proud of having a 10 or 12 year old "webmaster".
