Just bought a high traffic (209k uniques) website/blog - need advice on monetization

I just purchased a high traffic website/blog that is climbing the Alexa rankings quickly and seeing about 209k unique visitors monthly. The site is seeing $600 in monthly adsense and advertiser revenue currently, and I believe that it has the potential for a lot more given the amount of traffic coming in. The demographic is ages 18-35.

What would you recommend I do to maximize the earnings potential and monetization of the site?

  • What is the blog about so we can monetize it accordingly??
  • No one can answer that without knowing the niche/topic of that blog.
  • Congratulations on nice passive income!

No one needs to know exactly what site or niche to give you some ideas.

You can add Clickbank products or CPA offers that are related to the site.

I am sure other where can direct you with much more detail on that matter without you having to create unnecessary competition to your site.

    • Sorry about that guys. You can check out the site at Evil Clown Valley dot com (WF is not allowing me to post links yet) -- it's a photo blog that contains a lot of weird stories or things the younger demographic would be attracted toward checking out.

  • Try adding some info links...there are a lot of different sites you could go with.

Also if your blog has a specific niche you can add related info products links and/or banners. You can pick these kind of products from Clickbank. If you see that you have success with them, then you can make your own info product in order to get paid the full price, not only the commission.

Another thing you can try is to sell impression ads, you have a solid source of monthly traffic.

    • Thanks for the ideas Mrsparrow. As far as impression ads go, what's the best way to get started down that path? Do I use a major ad space company to broker it for me (and if so, which ones are good?), or do I just start knocking on other site owners doors with the traffic stats on my site?

  • If you could tell us about the the niche. The demography you target seems to be pretty interesting. between 18-35(actual net surfers) show keen interest in various online activities. You may setup some thoughtful platform for them so that they can get interested and mint money for you.

It would have been much easier for us if you had told us about the target niche.
  • I would sign up to be an affiliate of some Halloween Costume retailers and promote those for the next 40 days or so. Additionally CPA offers would probably do well, especially if you could find survey's about topics your audience was interested in.

      Nice site.

But what's with the obstructive red sliding thing on the left-hand edge? I did click on it a few times but don't understand why you'd want others to see the site it links to. What's all that about? It gets in the way of text you're trying to read. I don't know about "traffic" but you'll certainly avoid losing some people (I don't imagine I'm the only one?!) very quickly by removing it, anyway.

    • I love the Halloween offer idea, Doug. Thanks!
  • I would be extremely wary buying a site that is only 2 months old. You can achieve that Alexa ranking easily. There may be bought traffic involved. I am also suspicious that 10 links have been sold already. If you decide to go ahead, the transaction must be done by escrow since it will give you an option to reject the site.

  • You can monetize your site with cpa offers. CPM networks pay too less, adsense along with some cpa offers can generate quite a lot of revenue.

    Good luck!

    • Here's the response from the seller when I confronted him on issues raised by theimdude:

Traffic on this website may be really different in different parts of the
day, or of the week. It all depends on your content. If you can make
interesting post, and if you promote it on my submit list, it would be
enough to earn as I was earning, or much more. It all depends of you. I
wasn't working on this website every day. If you work on it every day it's
gonna be better for you. Nothing is fake on this website. Adsense is used
just for this account. I didn't use any proxy cheating or anything like
that, and you can see that on my analytics. Alexa is rising every day, as
you can see. When I started this auction Alexa rank was 60k, and after 3
days it is 58k. In last few days I stopped working on this website, as you
can see by the visits. Statcounter and Google analytics can show you how
many visits it had, and where they came from. You just need to continue
working on a website. And my statistics, which you can see on the website
(whoIsOnline stats) shows how many people are currently online.

I hope that everything is okay now. I am not trying to cheat on you. I am
working this kind of job for 3 years. You can check everything in stats
      that I uploaded.

      I'm waiting for your response.
  • Ad placement is all wrong.

Go check Google's guidelines for ad placement.

    • I would say ask him permission to log in the server and check the stats.

Your call but not even bigger sites with more relevant news items get that traffic especially in a newly registered domain. The one thing that seems wrong there is all those video's on the side as they just redirect you traffic from your site.
  • I just checked the flippa, i think people can still buy that site, are you sure that you are the current owner of that site?
    • [1] reply
    • Yes, it was just showing pending for a while because the funds were in escrow.
  • Another hot market and item you may want to advertise on this site if you keep it is the whole "get your ex back" products. Your demographic will suite this product perfectly.
  • Check out popular sites frequented by the same type of visitor and see how they are monetizing. They have done all the research on what converts already.

  • You can add Google adsense to your site and see what produce you can fine in your in your niche/topic and sell it.
  • Since it's about a lot of different topics, I'd probably figure out your highest trafficked pages and monetize them separately with related ads. That's what I'd do... BUT I'm not the expert at these types of sites.
  • theimdude nailed it. Cancel the deal, the seller is most likely ripping you off.

Even the red stats thing on the left hand side is showing ave 7 visitors per hour which is 5K a month not 209K. Alexa rank can be faked and is showing huge peaks and big troughs. Hardly any indexable content, very few external backlinks and those that are are from forum profiles. Sites like this are ten a penny. Where is the supposed traffic coming from?

Only buy something you can verify traffic on 100% through Google Analytics or similar. And, I hate to say this, but be wary of buying sites from people who have poor English skills.
  • The site is has interesting content and I see some potential there but I fail to see how this site is drawing that much traffic. Almost all of the posts are written in broken English and need to be rewritten. Every time I go to the site, I only see 3-5 visitors on there. It just doesn't add up.

Unless you can verify this traffic is legitimate or you got a really good deal, I'd be very cautious releasing the money.
  • Hey there

I would be thrilled to write you some guest posts for free about any topics you choose or stories too with author bio box.

    Thanks in advance

    • I think you're almost four years too late for that.
  • Id say you just lost everything

  • Depending on your niche, you can a 'Recommended Products' or a 'Products Review' section, where you review different products & insert your affiliate links at the end of each review.

  • Hi, I don't know what niche your website is so I think you can try high converting affiliate products related to your website niche. You can also sell advertising space and go to different forums related to your website niche and open accounts. You can set your signature link that you are selling advertising space and I am sure most people will jump for it if it's getting loads of traffic. Thanks
  • This thread may be old, but there are still people out there facing the same question.

I would add some Clickbank products!
