Are There Any Marketers With Similar Names as You?

I feel sorry for one of my friends online. He has a name similar to another marketer and so everyone now either emails me to ask why he turned spammy or emails him to complain about what's really someone else!

How do you rectify this other than to continue beating the "that's not me" drum?

I'd hate to see a Tiffany Bow pop up and start spamming the crap out of people and them get it mixed up.

Not to the best of my knowledge

I agree that it would suck to be associated with spammers.

I can see that would create all kinds of problems.

Maybe, if that happened one could operate under a pen name for a while
      (just a suggestion).

I know several of my friends operate this way because their name is too close to
to someone else known on the internt.

Life sucks sometimes and your too young when you are born to pick your own name.

LOL! The only one people ever confused me with is the Squidoo Queen. But luckily, we're both good people. Ha!

There are other "Alexa Smiths", I'm sorry to say. At least two of them, that I know of, at EZA. One "Alexa Smith" and one "Alexa J Smith" or "Alexa D Smith" or whatever her middle initial is. And I suspect one of them may also own the unused site alexasmith.com and be the person who never replies to my emails asking whether it's for sale (don't want to ask too often or sound too desperate, though, in case it increases the price).

I second the pen name idea. Luckily, the only other Steve Oliphant I know of is a programmer not a marketer. (I like to think that I am both.)

I don't have that problem (that I know of - hah). Has he tried contacting the other person to find out if they can work something out? Maybe he can offer the "spammy" guy some business pointers and at least try to turn him around a bit.

I wonder if the other guy's name is real - or if he chose it as his pen name on purpose. Is there a way to find out?

There are probably many marketers operating under a pen name, using a name very similar to a well known marketer in order to ride off the back of their popularity for as long as they can.

Several years ago, for reasons I still do not understand, an art student in California started posting his artwork in a forum under my name.

Literally, my full name. His display name in the forum wasn't "CDarklock," it was "Caliban Tiresias Darklock." And after a while, I started getting email from people who didn't know I was a graphic artist, too, and would I give them a quote on this or that?

It took me a couple weeks to track down the issue, and once I did, I sent the individual in question a single email to the effect that Darklock was a trademark of Darklock Communications and we would pursue legal action if he attempted to use it in a business context. (I didn't like doing this, but trademark law is what it is, and I was legally required to notify once I became aware of him.)

Then I simply started responding to people who asked me about this and telling them that no matter the name, it wasn't me, and they'd need to contact that person some other way.

Within a month, the student had basically disappeared - I presume reappearing under another name. I would hope the new name was actually his, and not another person from some swipe file or something.

I once had a fish named Caliban Tiresias Darklock. I knew I should have trademarked it back then.

No, but there is an internationally famous skateboarder that shares my exact name. I have had a few people confuse us and try to approach me about skateboards.
