Should I use single optin?

Here's everything I know...

1) Double optin can qualify leads more

2) Single optin can increase spam complaints

3) Single optin is more open to malicious attacks to ruin your list

4) David DeAngelo uses single optin and I'm in almost the same niche

Obvious #4 persuades me the most. If someone successful has been using this method for a long period of time, I think thats a pretty good sign.

Any advice or experience w this?

You are just taking much more of a risk with single as it can get you into trouble with the whole spam complaint issue. You wouldn't want to loose your list that you worked so hard for would you?

It's your call, but double is a whole lot safer.

You need to look at the facts and the facts are almost all the major guru's use single optin.

      1. using single optin you know you are getting those leads

      2. using double optin you will not get as many leads but they will be more qualified.

I remember Bobby Walker saying that he uses single optin because he knows that those leads are going onto his list.

      hope this helps

Yeah, thanks to both of you for helping me with my decision. I guess it's hard to argue with the gurus, unless they have more lenient restrictions from their mailing company because of the money they spend and the size of their list.

For me, the decision of whether to use single or confirmed opt-in is always niche-dependent, so I'm with you in finding your 4th point most persuasive, and would probably be going with single opt-in, myself, in your circumstances. Good luck.

Personally, I do not feel comfortable with a single opt in. I like to make sure that my emails are deliverable and that I am getting a valid address.

If you use a hosted email service, there is no downside to using single opt-in. Your opt-in rates will be much higher. Some email services are really sensitive to spam complaints (like MailChimp), but if you remain under 1% you can rock. GetResponse is definitely single opt-in friendly: Email Marketing Software, Autoresponder - GetResponse

Lol, funny, I use mailchimp... non-the-less I will give single optin a shot and see what happens. I've been with them a while so they won't do anything like cancel my account. Plus they say they allow single optin as long as it's not deceptive to the user about what they are signing up for.

      thanks everyone

    An important thing to note...

I think that 'David DeAngelo' uses a self-hosted script rather
than a third-party autoresponder service provider. Therefore,
he has more control over his list and how single opt-in and
    complaints are dealt with.

    If you're using single opt-in with a third-party autoresponder
provider such as Mailchimp, then you're less in control of what
happens if you experience high spam complaints, etc.

So, you need to compare apples with apples.

    Dedicated to your success,

I'd use single opt-in for the dating niche. People in this niche may not necessarily be computer/internet savvy, and may not understand the need to double-confirm something that they had just opted in to.

Just an opinion, but David DeAngelo's niche is very specialised and is only gonna attract a certain section of the market.

So I'm thinking there is less likelyhood of general interwebers signing up for for his list and so less chance that they will forget they did so and complain.

The people that sign up for his stuff really want it!

Well, he did mention that he is in a niche very closely related to David's, and this is probably why he's trying to emulate what he's doing.

I've used single opt-in with NAME ONLY opt-in forms for some time with no complaints. This is going to get you the best conversions, nearly guaranteed.

You might be careful and have a backup plan. Always back up your list and save it to your hard drive. If worse came to worst you could buy and host your own autoresponder script and keep mailing your list.

    Cheers,

Single opt in works for me very well. There is actually not a bit difference using either single opt in or double opt in. There is one thing for sure, you will lose quite a number of subs if you use double opt in.

Single opt in is what works for me and my mentor whom taught me this.

    I am loving it. =)

I use both. Depends on the squeeze page, niche, etc.

For example I have two 7 day courses that I offer, for both of these I use single opt-in after I realized I was losing a lot b/c they weren't confirming.

However, other lists like the one I use in giveways is double opt. They are getting a free download so I make em work for it a little.

Using single optin I have seen my bounce rate increase but thats okay b/c those ppl are removed by aweber.

Also, spam complaints have always been under 1% and Aweber removes those folks as well. But overall it's only a slight difference. For example, I've had about 10 bounces over the last few mailings and only 2 spam complaints in last 2 months which was like .22% for the two mailings.

Just figure out what works best for your model/niche, etc.

I use double opt-in to lower bounce rates and increase the quality of the lead. However, I've always wondered what the darkside (single opt-in) would feel like.
