New Site Has Got Me Puzzled!

Hi Warriors,

This new site I put up a few months ago has got me pulling what’s left of my hair out!

I have one other Wordpress site but this is the one I consider to be my REAL first Wordpress site. This is the one I am trying to move up the ranks and at the same time learn something from it.

I have been doing all I know to get this thing showing in Google but when I run a Rank Check through MS its main keyword, “laptop cooler pad” just doesn’t show up!

If you flick through the site you can see I have written quite a few long posts, and I still have many more to go. All these posts have the product name in the content plus the main keyword.

So how come it isn’t being picked up by Google??

I have done all the usual bookmarking, RSS, article submission, I am getting regular pingbacks, (not sure if that helps),etc.

Also, the site has been up for a few months and I see that more people are visiting when I check Google Analytics so how come I haven’t even made one sale??

Have I not designed my site properly?

It still isn’t finished, like the little intro in the small blue box on the homepage will have to be changed, I have to sort out the categories, maybe change the background color, stuff like that.

Shall I just keep blasting out long posts and adding content in hope that things will improve or have I messed up somewhere?

I really need an expert eye to maybe point out what I cannot see.

Can any of you offer some suggestions?

One more thing.....the site isn't registered with a www. at the front. Do you think this is messing things up?

The site is in my sig.

Thanks,

Andy

Go to wordpress dashboard > Settings > Privacy > make it visible to search engines.

Maybe you're not even indexed? Use google webmaster tools to get indexed almost instantly.

      Hi Toby,

Thanks. I have that done already. I think the site is actually indexed...well many of the pages are indexed.

When I do a check in Google "site:http://MYSITE" it comes up ok....I think.

Look at this site, bestlaptopcooler.org, and see if you can figure out why they're showing up as #1 for the term 'laptop cooler pad', beating out even Amazon, CNet and manufacturers sites.

The reason why your site isn't ranking and why a very similar site is becomes obvious when you look at the backlinks for both sites.

Also, I see that you're using Goggle Analytics on the site. What is that telling you about the traffic you do get?

If you are relying on ranking alone to get traffic and convert, you are making a sad mistake.

Have you submitted article on the topic to other article directories? Have you made some videos on the subject? Have you added some informative articles on some web 2.0 properties?

        Hi Avenuegirl,

Yes, I have written many articles and the hits are rising. Maybe I am too impatient.
Yes, I have made a few Web 2.0 sites to link to.
No, I haven't made any videos yet. That is something I am getting to this week.

        Thanks

I know that this won't be the answer you are looking for most likely... but I would say move on!

SEO can be such a slow moving thing sometimes. It sounds like you are doing the right things.

Sooooooo many times I have just "let go" of the results of a certain website and moved on making more, making more, making more...then sure enough a couple months later it starts earning money out of nowhere. Then I end up getting reminded to do some promotion to it, and it's more receptive to my efforts.

I'm not saying give up. Maybe just put it aside and let it stew for a bit.

            Hi JRCarson,

So you are saying, let it go and work on something else for a while.

I can see that, but I think it is too early to let it do its own thing for now...no?

I mean, the site is only a few months old and there is still a load of stuff to do on it. Plus I have many more review posts to write up.

Christmas is around the corner and I at least wanna get the thing on page one, if not at the top half of page one, for the main keyword.

This is why I am asking you Warriors because i want to do the right work to get my site to the first page.

            Thanks

      Hi bgmacaw,

Thanks for pointing that out. I took a look at that sites backlinks and you are right, I see quite a few medium PR sites. My backlinks are crap compared to this site's.

Yes I do have Google Analytics but I probably don't read it as well as I should.

You wrote: "What is that telling you about the traffic you do get?"

This is a very good question and I am going to look into that.

When you are in your Wordpress settings you can change your settings to include the "www" at the front of your domain; though I am not sure it's a good idea to do now if you have articles and pages indexed in Google without it.
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[2667001].message }}
    • Profile picture of the author sharpturn
      Hi DeborahDera,

Yeh, I know about that settings change in Wordpress but, as you have already mentioned I am a little worried about changing it now that I have lots of content. Maybe the whole lot will be lost.

Do you think not having the www. will effect rankings and such?

If that is so then I haven't a clue what I should do to get that sorted.

You see, I haven't much experience buying and hosting domains and so when I got this website up and running I didn't realise that you could choose between having or not having the www.

      Dang!

The site is new and needs time to settle in Google's eyes. Those sites which are ranking high are either big time players and been around for a long time or as mentined, they have good backlinks in place.

New sites can take up to 3 months to start seeing their pages indexed and ranked well if all you do is rely on On-Page-SEO and content. With that said, I would still work at it and give it time to build momentum - the more articles get picked by the search engines the higher you will rank. Just be to have a good internal linking structure in place.

Thanks Zulfnore, I think maybe your right.

I took a look at my backlinks so far and even though I have done a fair bit of backlinking to mixed sites the only sites that seem to have shown up are squidoo.com and squidu.com!

I am not sure what you mean by "a good internal linking structure"
Maybe this is something I am missing??

Do you have a sitemap on this site? Did you submit it to Google?

Find related sites with high PR and get a link back to your site. You
can do this through forums, etc.

I don't remember if you said it was indexed by Google yet. The last
step to move up may be to issue a "reconsideration" with Google. I
had a site that was on the 1st page in Google for the primary keyword
for 3 years. Suddenly, it dropped down to page 6...along with my
earnings! I tried for months to get it moved up and all it did was bump
up and down. Only AFTER I asked for reconsideration, something actually
happened. Suddenly I was back on page 1.

You can submit the reconsideration through Google Tools.

        Hi Digital Info Diva,

Yes I have put up a sitemap. This is something I am trying to learn to do until it becomes a habit.

I have not heard of that "reconsideration" thing you mention though.

        Thanks,

Ranking in the search engines for good keywords is not an easy task. You need to build an entire traffic generation system.

When it comes to search engine optimizations there are many different components you need to look at.

I noticed you said you had market samurai. I would start with analyzing the competition with the SEO competition tab.

This might be a keyword that you are not able to rank for that quickly.

You need to concentrate on building quality content in your blog.

And then concentrate on building back links to that quality content.

Plus, you need to make sure that your blog is search engine optimized.

There are certain things you can do to optimize your blog to help it rank a little better. You need to make sure you have the right plug-ins installed and you need to make sure you are notifying the search engines in the proper way.

All of this is way to complex to explain in one thread, but there are many different aspects when it comes to ranking in the search engines with your blog.

So, don't get discouraged but keep going, keep testing, and you will get better and better at it. Or, find someone who knows what they're doing and follow a proven path.

      I checked through your site

If you are getting visitors but they are not buying - perhaps make a clearer "call to action" instead of a "price check" button have something like click here to BUY NOW

Thanks Aussie Al....... for the tip.

HarveyDanger,....... that is a very good point. I don't think I use the main keyword an unusual amount of times in each post but I think I is over 2 times.

I hope that isn't too many times.
I don't want Google to think I am spamming my posts as I work quite hard on them.

Zulfnore....... thank you for explaining an internal linking structure. It makes a lot of sense. The thing is I use a breadcrumbs WP plugin. Isn't that a kind of internal linking structure or am I way off base?

        Thanks all,

        Andy

Also, regarding the Internal Linking Structure do tags work in the same way?

After each post I have a list of tags, are they not interlinking?

      Hi Shannon Herod,

      Thanks for the positivity.

I have done pretty much all you have mentioned. I think maybe the one point I need to work on more is the backlinking. Even though I have submitted articles to many sites I realise these could take ages to become backlinks...if even they ever do.

I am hoping the backlink outsourcing I did will come through so I can at least have some good foundation links.

      Thanks,

How often are you using the keywords "laptop cooler pad" in your posts? The reason I ask this is, if you are "spamming" the keywords Google could have "sandboxed" your site for that. To them spam could be using the keywords more than twice in a single post.

A good internal linking structure would be to have related posts and pages linking and referencing each other.

With Wordpress the default structure is centered around the index.php linking inwards to single posts. Navigation menu to pages and archives back to posts/categories. What you need to do is give it that little extra helping hand and have as many of your single posts linking to other posts and or pages. Plus have as many of your pages linking to other posts and or pages.

The more interlinking you do the easier it is for the spiders to find your "related" content that is not only relevant to the site but to each other - this is where Goolge puts its emphasis on how it ranks a page/post in terms of how many "Votes" that page/post has.

Don't over do it though as Uncle Google may take to it as being link sculpturing or an attempt to manipulate their "Algorithm" - only link what is related and you'll be just fine

      Hope that makes sense!

  • Thank you for sharing this link

First of all, I really like your website. The graphics, color combination and general layout are just right. Secondly, I see that you only have Twitter. I suggest you register with other social network sites, especially Facebook which is the most important social network available today for promoting your online business. Also you would be well advised to open a fan page on Facebook for your online business.

    Hi,

Ok, here are my 2 cents....

You need a call to action in your reviews... "click to buy now", "save 40% on this product"... etc etc....

    Change the wordpress favicon...

At your index page you have a "tag cloud", I would change this to something like "bestselling Laptop cooling pads" listing like the top 10 bestselling cooling pads at Amazon, and have a link to the review on you site and then have a link to amazon.

You do not cloak your aff links... use a plugin like pretty-links or something similar.

    Good luck!

    Jute

Just my opinion, but "2" is not a magic number for how many times the keyword can be used in your text. It is instead related to how much written ontent you have on a page. If your page's word count is only 100, then yes, I'd not use your keyword more than twice. However, if your page has 300 words for example, then using the keyword 4 or 5 times would not be a problem at all. I try to stick to 1.5% or so and I've never had a problem.

      Hi ,

Listbuildingfornewbies: I must admit I have always wondered about doing a Facebook Fan page. I have heard a little about it but don’t really know much about it. I should look into it.

Jute: Thanks for your ideas. I never thought to change the WP favicon. Not really sure how to do it. I will Google it.
No I don’t cloak my affiliate links. Is this important to do? I never really thought about it.

Karenloye: My average word count is around 1000 per post so I guess using my main keyword around 5 times in these posts should be ok. Maybe every 150 words. That what I usually do.

      Cheers all,
