Anyone making money on elance?

I've been writing for a while now, but I never been on elance yet. Just wanted to know if any of you guys are making money on elance and how?

Can you share some tips for me and give me some realistic expectations on how much money I can make?

Thanks!

Elance is a job board where you bid on projects. The amount of money you make depends a) on your rates and b) on the number of jobs you win.

I find Elance to be highly competitive but not as bad as sites like GAF (now Freelancer.com) or RAC (Rent A Coder).

If you are willing to stick with bidding for a while, you will find people who recognize the value of paying a little more to have the work they want done completed correctly the first time. Use your own discretion and don't settle for unrealistically low rates.

vWorker (Rentacoder) is surprisingly less competitive than you might think, especially after considering the size of its international user base.

According to Pulse of vWorker: Misc., vWorker's employers select the lowest bidder less than 20% of the time.

      • I've just started on Elance and got 2 jobs within 2 days and both of the employers have asked me to stay on and do extra jobs. Yes the pay is low and I need to speed up my skills but I must be doing something right. As far as I'm concerned I am at the bottom of the ladder and need to work my way up and prove myself. So I will accept the lower end of the pay scale and hone my skills but in time I expect to raise my prices and pick and choose the jobs to some extent. Build up your portfolio and feedback, most employers are certainly after quality work, if you can prove that then they will hire you.

GAF is probably the worst right now! A few years ago, it was somewhat bearable, but today it's better to stay away from there, especially if you are writing articles - people pay $1-$3 per article of 500 words and of course all they get at this rate is garbage, but that doesn't seem to discourage them. It seems to me that most people are after SE food rather than text that they expect somebody to actually read....

    Hello,

Also try freelancer aside from elance. If you are from Canada I don't suggest going in a freelance sites because the rate there is too low for you to have. The highest rate would be $5 per 500word article (happens once in a blue moon) and the lowest would be $1.5.

I've been working there for quite a while now because I'm from the philippines and money conversion is quite good. If you can write a 500 word article in less than 30 minutes then go for it! it will pay. but much slower than that you will have a hard time getting some motivation cause the pay is too low for you.

    Regards,
    Rayson

I find the best way to get work on sites such as Elance is to have a unique selling position and show the client why you're a better candidate for the job than any of the other bidders. It doesn't always work because some clients are restricted by their budget and there's just no way around it. However, if you sell your skills and experience, and show why they will be good for their project, you'll find clients who are willing to pay your price for what you can offer.

Elance is one of the more expensive freelance sites to operate in and if you are from US or Canada, you will get lowballed by all the offshore providers every time. I used to make a good living in Graphic Design category until the offshore providers started selling everything for peanuts. Wasn't worth my time any longer.
