Making money with surveys...

This isn't about filling out surveys or promoting them as an affiliate.

It's about surveying your customers and finding out what they REALLY want... 'cause once you know that, it's pretty damn easy to make money.

So I just sent out a survey to 2000 of our customers, and got 150 of them to fill it out... When I started analyzing the answers, I was pretty shocked.

Here's some of the BIG eye openers I learned...

Big Eye Opener #1 - Your customer is NOT as smart as you think they are

We promote a fat loss product mainly to people 40+ years old who went to college.

I can't even believe some of the answers we were getting from people who bought our product. I thought our customers were a little smarter and more "fitness/diet aware" but most of them really had no clue.

Big Eye Opener #2 - Your customer has probably already spent a lot of money in your niche

One of the main questions I asked was, what other fitness and diet products do you own?

I was pretty shocked to see that a large majority of our buyers had bought 7+ fitness and diet products before. Everything from cook books, to Clickbank products to a Bowflex.

This opened my eyes a lot to the potential of making more products that weren't just digitial products...

Big Eye Opener #3 - Very, Very Few of your buyers will actually use your product as intended

Most of the people who bought our product which is a combo diet/workout program seemed to kind of pick and choose which elements they wanted to use...

I know I'm always in the mindset that once they buy the product, they are probably using it the way I intended them to. But that is definitely not the case.

Big Eye Opener #4 - Simplify & Dumb down everything

If you've been doing something for a while you are gonna skip over a lot of very important parts that newbies and beginners are not going to understand.

If you teach internet marketing, the idea of a landing page and an optin probably seems pretty simple to you - yet most of your subscribers probably dont even have one up yet!

You need to help them and explain things to them step-by-step. The more you can hold their hand and do everything for them, the more they will keep buying stuff from you.

Just from doing this 1 little survey I have learned a ton about my customers, and it's gonna pay off big time in the near future for me...

Hope this helps a few of you

    Justin,

I like this post. Yes, we need to find out what our customers want because we are not selling the products to our own selves but to total strangers with some strange mindset, priorities, scale of preference, etc.

Concerning your "Big Eye Opener #1) I don't completely agree. I think it depends on the market and you can't just make a blanket statement that all customers aren't as smart as you think. Consumers can be very smart and savvy. It just depends on how much they know about the product and what they want.

I would say that with 95% of my copywriting and consulting clients for info-product businesses the product owner drastically overestimates how smart their customer is.

They ALWAYS talk above their heads, and end up using sales copy that the reader can't relate to or doesnt "quite get"

I would say its one of the biggest problems most info-product marketers have.
