World of Warcraft Niche?

Anyone here doing well in the WoW niche? I've heard great things about it - over 9 million users and it's a super addictive game.

If you are in it, what methods are you using to drive traffic? Are you capturing emails with an opt-in page? And how hungry are the subscribers for the products you're promoting?

Thanks!

I actually designed a review page for it a few months ago but have not implemented it as of yet. I know some of the clickbank products convert really well through article marketing how ever they convert even better with youtube videos. It has become a rather competitive niche though. Which is one of the reasons I have not built a site for it at the moment.

Well, I'm not into these types of games so I don't know how big the game still is, I know it was huge a few years ago....and the competition has probably saturated the market.

If you are interested in the video game niche, the way I would approach it is to look for games that are upcoming (you can see a list of release dates at IGN.com), and then create sites/products, etc.... around what games you think will become the most popular. You can get a feel for the potential popularity by visiting the gaming sites and seeing what people are most looking forward to, etc...

That's a pretty good amount of guides sold per week Chris. I always looking for new products to promote from CB. But since I search for products using cb-analytics.com the word "warcraft" is taken and always points to some defunct/old product so I searched for warcraf and your product didn't come up. One recommendation is to add the word Warcraft in your title or description. I'm sure you'll get a couple of more affiliates promoting your guide.

That's a good point, I used the keyword "Cataclysm" in the title because that's the latest expansion, I forgot the fact that many people would be looking using the keyword 'warcraft.'

Thank you very much for pointing that out, it's the littlest things sometimes!

"Cataclysm Wow Gold Guide" is the title for my guide right now. I'll be fixing that soon to say "Cataclysm Warcraft Gold Guide" for sure.

I'm not in this niche myself, but I have several friends who are, and they are absolutely loving it - it is the virtually perfect niche market, as it comprises a passionate, emotional crowd who will stop at nothing to win and advance through the levels, and are more than happy to pay someone who can provide a solution to their issues!

WoW keeps it fresh by having different expansion packs on a consistent basis, so there are always new things to write about and provide solutions for. If you can create a video product that walks them through levels, it'll absolutely sell like hot cakes because it'd be basically like giving them a peek over your shoulder as you play and complete levels - they'd be able to observe every little thing that you do to get past a level.

Great job, Stephen! Video marketing is pretty much a perfect fit for computer games, and you'll find that a large proportion of your target market hangs out a lot in Youtube!

Is there much of a backend, or do you just sell them the initial guide?

I'm not sure if I am the #1 gold guide, but judging by clickbank there are 3 guides above me in terms of gravity. However, they don't necessarily sell more than I do, there's really no way to tell their exact numbers and compare them to my own.

All I know is, none of them have the quality in my guide nor do they have the fanbase... going 10k+ strong right now on my blog about making gold.

      Chris,
I'm contemplating getting in to this niche also becasue I have some material on my computer that was designed for WoW but I never used it.

Do you have any tips for your affiliates or a guide you provide them?

Fell free to PM me also if you like.

Great to hear Tim, also please read the affiliate area page, I offer quite a bit of cool customization like your own headers for my sales page, premade emails, keyword lists, etc.

You can also sell the guide alongside a leveling guide since it was made to work with these as well (hence the make 20k gold while leveling bit).

There are now over 13 million players though not all of them are English speaking.

People are always googling for patchnotes, news about the game etc. So if you can establish your site as a reliable source for news you can earn a lot on selling guides, gold (the ingame gold) etc.

That is incorrect. It used to be 13 million but it has dropped to 10 million by Blizzard's own accounting.

I suspect the actual number is actually quite lower considering the promotions they've been doing to draw players back and to retain current ones.

As an FYI, I've been playing WoW since it came out and am still an avid player.

With games like Rift and Star Wars The Old Republic plus the fact that WoW has gotten fairly stale I don't see the user base going anywhere but down. Luckily for blizzard they have been creating a new MMO codenamed Titan and my boss tells me (I work for a game development company as well) that he was talking to one of his old programmers that now works for blizzard and of all their games it's the one they are most excited about.

Hopefully I can hit the ground running on that one when it comes out.

I have been a wow player for 4 years - I currently run a bot ingame 24/7 which makes about $50-60 a day from selling the gold (gold is the virtual currency in wow - you can find gold companies to sell it to at almost any time of day)

I have had pretty good luck with WOW, and I do mean luck. I don't play the game so I have been flying blind in this niche. I started with youtube marketing and started to see a sale here and there, then I went to article marketing in addition to video marketing and started to get a sale a day. I may add PPC to the list in the future but for now I just do free methods and do OK with a niche I really know nothing about. I'm afraid to start playing it..might get addicted to it and take me away from more important things, lol.

<---- avid wow player, so i is my wife.

    Chris,

PM/email me...i have some smaller sites in that niche but never really "hit it" with that particular niche. If you have ideas how and where to get traffic for this, let me know. 200 sales/week is very good. I'd really like to know how you do it Just plain SEO/keyword research?

The fact that we play WoW like crazy could be base for a nice authority site since i could actually add valuable content I simply never considered that niche that profitable for some odd reason.

I just run some keywords and that niche is GOLD. Just got a good domain name also.

Always wanted to make a site with those guides, i am so sick of IM/SEO and health stuff

Edit: Dont underestimate the customers. If a WoW player purchases a guide..then expect the guide up-to-date and not containing only outdated information from before WotLK.
In the past i sold some guides and the people told me they were junk/outdated...so i stopped promoting those.

Depends on what your offering them, usually gaming niches suck for traffic because there is a lot of teenage traffic, but WOW has a ton of older players, so it's pretty profitable, even affiliate sales to gold stores and stuff like that can make you lots

I know there are many sites and other things for users to buy already. And I mean A LOT! Guides here and there for everything you need for WoW. And there are still millions who play WoW and new people that are joining, so your business continues as well.

It might be hard to get started with all the already well built competition. Definitely a gold mine here, but tough to dig. If you hit the right spot and get in, you are gold.

Just adding to what Chris has been saying, there is a lot of money to be made in this niche. I've made some good money through clickbank selling guides and adsense on top of it.

It's a lot of work to build the content but once it's there traffic just poors in.

(I promote Chris's Guide as well, it's a great product as he puts a great deal of effort into it)

We have quite a few sites in the niche, and as we weren't making a lot through Clickbank, last month we put adsense on and had 1 click in about 20,000 impressions!

Well this is something where I can shine ;D

I've been playing WoW since the beggining, and, of course, I've promoted the gold guides, leveling guides, profession guides, pvp and pve guides - everything I could.

And I must say that these guides converts very well. While I haven't made that much sales, on the other hand, I only had couple of people visiting my websites really. I get VERY good EPC.

What you need to be aware of:

WoW players are not stupid. Now they know that every step they take marketers want to sell them something. Most guides are now very low quality (gold guides is a pure laugh if you ask me).

So, if you know nothing about the game it might be difficult to sell anything, because gamers will recognize you are not one of them, you don't know the term, you are not writing in slang etc.

How to get good marketing ideas?

You can make a fortune from WoW patches. Every couple of months there's a WoW content patch going on.

New weapons, armors are being added. Maybe new zones, dungeons, mounts, abilities, changes to UI and so on.

It's like a mini-expansion. Everybody waits for these patches, this is what makes the game super fun - everchanging content.

So how to cash on this? There's a WoW news sites like "WoW Insider" or "MMO-Champion" (Google them), where you can find all the news related to World of Warcraft. For example, as soon as I've heard that there will be a new secondary profession in WoW expansion Cataclysm, I've made a bunch of articles where I've talked about this new profession - archeology.

At that point I didn't knew anything about it, because blizzard haven't announced anything yet. So I just made things up to have some content (I wasn't selling anything by them).

I kept editing the articles when there was something new about this profession, and now I'm ranking for great bunch of keywords for arheology profession, and I get tons of traffic.

It's just about spotting the new thing and making content about it. Later on you can attach some product to it, because you can be sure - in wow there's a digital product for everything.

    What not to promote?

I can strongly recommend you NOT to promote PVE and PVP guides. Why? Because people don't really pay money for that. They get all the knowledge they need from their guild or arena partners, they don't need to outsource the information and buy a book.

Instead promote a gold or leveling guides (profession guides are good, but not awesome).

    Well, hope that helps

I've been a pvper myself It all starts at low levels, when you don't really care about top ratings and everything (because you are low level, and you can't access end-game content), and you just play battlegrounds until you are comfortable in stepping to arena.

Most players don't even do arena, they only play battlegrounds and TB, WG (sorry if I'm being too geek here, but no other way to explain), and you don't need any guide for that. Battlegrounds are mindless violence

Players who actually do arenas go to sites like arenajunkie.com instead of typing in google. Why? Word of mouth. They contact the top pvper on realm and ask them "hey how I can be as cool as you", and that pvper will answer them "go to arenajunkies.com".

That's why PVP and PVE guides sucks to be promoted

The world is a big place! I don't think selling anything in the game niches would get saturated. There are always new players coming on board.

As it turns out, I'm looking for a similar guide like Chris's in the LOTRO niche as I have a popular blog tied to a Twitter account that is gaining some recognition for the fan fiction I write on it.

The Lord of the Rings Online is not quite as big as WOW but that niche has already made me money in the last 4 years since I released a LOTR web template back in 2007 bringing me clients who are LOTR/Tolkien fans.

Some of my visitors to my LOTRO site are WOW players as well, but most of them are really passionate LOTRO players, so Chris or anyone, if you know of a good LOTRO guide, please pm me as I am very interested in promoting it.

LOTRO may be a good niche but the thing that I think about is that it is free.

I am not saying that they WON'T pay for information or a how to guide but with WOW as they are all paying a subscription you know that they are paying out money for the game already.

Although if you have traffic for LOTRO there are a few guides at Killer guides you could try or of course you could make your own

Some of the better LOTRO guides I saw were selling for about $30 each, and each were specific to one class.

And being free has little bearing. You have to pay to do the good stuff in the game, like most the "free" ones.

              Very good point ^

I think LOTRO do a system where you have to pay for speed leveling in the game and for mounts etc...

Disclaimer: For those of you that do not play MMORG (massive multiplayer online roleplaying games) I apologize for what that last sentence sounds like!

As I say I have not tried the LOTRO niche - got a guide for most of the others FFXV, WOW etc...

If there are a;ready guides out there and they are selling you are normally on to a winner.

I am not a warcraft player (fear of addiction) so can someone explain to me how one could go about monetizing this whole warcraft patches thing. Is it monetizable from an affiiate or indeed a vendor point of view? Would fans buy guides based on how to be successful with regards to what the new patches are about? Thanks.

Yup, if the patch is game changing enough (like the last expansion in december) people will pay to learn how to succeed.

                    Yes Chris is right here.

The last update to the game was Cataclysm and it had major changes to the game such as a new level 80-85 content.

2 new playable characters and tons of other updates as well.

The small patches inbetween the major updates change bits and pieces in the game.

The key here really is making sure you know what they are looking for right now.

                    For instance:

"Best Farming Spots in WOW Cataclysm" would get far more attention than "Best Farming Spots In WOTLK (Wrath of the Lich King).

                    Chris

The patches can change the whole feel of the game. Minor content patches may only change minor mechanics in some of the classes, while major patches can change the way the game is played period.

In these patches some items will get removed, while others get added, which could make some of these items highly valuable due to rarity.

The really major patches happen every couple years, with one having just happened a few months back. These patches essentially reset the playing field for everyone. They introduce a new leveling cap, new dungeons, items, and ways to make gold and the need for new info.

You can capitalize on patches in many ways. Videos to draw traffic to your site, new guides to talk about the changes, etc.

The minor patches that can change the way a class plays is pretty much the exact reason why PvP and PvE guides tend to struggle. With every minor patch the way a class works may change a bit, which requires you to adapt to those changes to be successful. Forums win here simply because it is easier to allow the playerbase to handle such things.

thank you, yes, I saw those guides. And you're right. The F2P model is brilliant because people are paying to get stuff from the LOTRO store and many people are upgrading to VIP when they realize what a great deal $9.99 a month really is.
Both LOTRO servers that I play on are very busy and commerce is alive and well

@Chris...I like the look of your marketing materials and I do like gaming. I see no reason why I couldn't get a little info domain to promote your guide because I think you have a winner there.

I agree, there is money to be made in the gaming niche...a lot of money.

Depending on where you live, you might be able to get a demo version at a local games store.

I should warn you that there will be a lot of downloading either way as you have to have your version up to date with the current one. Our last minor patch was nearly 100 mb. Our last major patch was nearly 2 gigs.

Regrettably, I played this game for around 5years. Yes, it's extremely addicting. The areas where I felt the most money was made (legally that is) were in the How-To e-books. People would write a step-by-step manual on how to get your character to the highest level the most efficiently. Or how to earn the most gold in the shortest time. Or how to configure your character the best for player-versus-player combat. Trouble is, with the game being out for so long now, most of these have already been written.

I tried to get a jump on the Warhammer game that came out quite a while ago by purchasing a limited beta key so I could play before the release day. But I was tricked and some guy made off with my money. Color me gullible/naive.

Another tactic I used was to setup web forums for the various guilds in the game. Once you're in the game, if you're not part of a "guild" then you're basically nobody. Lots of these guilds don't have any kind of web presence so they can coordinate or plan the times that they want to play together or to just chat about it. I created a forum presence called NetGuilds (again, this is ancient history) and allowed guilds to register and I'd carve out their own little private spot. If I had marketed that correctly, that could have been a great success.

However, you probably won't have any traction with Warcraft unless you're one of the WoW-addicted players yourself.

        Good luck!

Yes I am in the WOW niche with both a leveling and a gold guide - I am answering because I offer a free report with how to drive traffic in the niche on the affiliate page of my site.

Having run my wow gold blog for 2 years, I can say it's very easy to do and your audience will love you for it. Even when I was a brand new site fighting to be different and better than the rest, I still made $800 in my first month. The gaming niche is awesome. Period.

There are some big games coming out in the next year or so that I believe will be big, for gaming especially MMO's get in early, the chatter starts and sites are made the day after the game is announced and MMO fans passionately talk about the games for years before they are ever released.

My advice go after games that are not released yet, the visitors you get are also playing WoW currently, and soft sell them WoW "stuff" passively while you have them on your site.
