I'm close to releasing my first product and I understand testimonials have a big effect on sales.

I was wondering, how do people acquire testimonials before a product launch?

    Tony, I scored a BIG one...but, that wasn't without alot of serious leg work over about 6 months. One thing I did was continually left high quality and relevant comments on blog owner's blogs. I gave...and gave...and gave some more...and, eventually the blog owner(s) began to take notice. I purposefully presented myself as a 'mentee'....I know some people's egos can't bear that, but, I made it a point to say that I had downloaded his free eBook, and was studying it very hard. Whether he asked for it or not, I gave him occasional updates, and told him how his eBook was helping me.

    I wanted to be his 'case study'....no matter how big the blogger, it makes THEM look good when they can say "hey, the book I created help THIS guy earn $10,000 in a week". It could turn out to be a huge selling point for the blogger, and their future products. ALWAYS think about what you can give and how you can benefit others....

    This is why MANY books about social media/marketing talk about the 'law of reciprocity'....

    A very few people would leave a great video testimonial even if the product is great. And you need the testimonials BEFORE you launch. It is pretty hard to get real testimonials - mainly when your product is not in the money making niche)

    I had the same problem. But I hired some great actors trough craigslist and all those classifieds sites. Post your ad there. The response will be huge

      That is an important point and many can't do that. "I think you are great" works better than "let me tell you how great I am" when you are hoping for a favor from someone.

      I was under the impression the new FTC regulations don't permit this. I tried to link to the website but I don't have enough posts for that. A simple google search for "FTC regulations for internet marketing and advertising" will pull it up. I'm pretty sure this would qualify as deceptive advertising.

      For me personally, if its practical, I try to send the product to 5 or 6 people I know personally and ask them to send me a testimonial. I don't tell them what to say, but they're friends of mine, so they say something positive, and also mention that they've known me for a while, etc.

      Alternatively, you can give away your product to some fellow warriors, or prominent bloggers in your niche, as a few people have already mentioned.

      This works for the initial launch, then you can get more real testimonials by sending one or two emails to your customers asking for one after you've made some sales. You could load it into your auto-responder for 5 and 10 days after they purchased, or something around there. If you have a quality product, you should get at least a few genuine testimonials if you ask for them a couple times.

      When you ask for the testimonial, you could use something along the lines of this:

      "Hey {NAME},

      I wanted to touch base with you to see how you're doing with
      {YOUR PRODUCT}. Have you gotten through all the material?
      I wanted to let you know that I'm here if you have any
      questions, or need any help. You can always get in touch with
      me at {YOUR SUPPORT}.

      I've been getting a lot of great feedback on {YOUR PRODUCT}
      so far, but I'd definitely love to hear what you think about it.
      Send me an email at {YOUR TESTIMONIAL EMAIL} and attach
      a photo if you like. I might just use it on the {YOUR PRODUCT}
      website.

      I hope you're starting to see some success with {YOUR PRODUCT},
      but if not, that's ok. Remember, everything takes some practice,
      and again, don't hesitate to contact me if you're having trouble.

      Talk soon,
      Me"

      Ok, that was kind of off the cuff and generic. (And crappy.) But you get the idea. You ask for it in a round-a-bout way. I hope this all made sense, and helped. I'm kind of sleep deprived, so I apologize if I rambled.

    Usually the easiest way is simply to give your product to people it is relevant to, and ask them for their feedback.

    If your product is genuinely good, then you shouldn't have any problems getting some positive feedback.

    Then you ask for their permission to use their feedback in your marketing.

    Hey Tony,

    Testimonials before you launch a product is always a problem. Specially real, authentic testimonials. Even better, testimonials that show results rather than someone just saying nice things about you.

    In other words 'Results oriented' testimonials are miles better than 'this is a nice product' type of testimonials.

    I recently implemented a very innovative strategy that earned my several video + text testimonials, one of my peers had the same problem and I shared the strategy in detail with him, he too was very successful with it.

    I guess I'll make a product out of it, as I can see a vast majority of marketers will be interested in gaining authentic and genuine social proof on their sales letters.

    I used to wait for testimonials to come to me, boy was that a mistake!

    if my program promises results in X number of days I will then followup with customers after that amount of time has passed...

    The key is never asking for testimonials as people tend to shy away from giving them or worse. Put so much thought into what they write it sounds hyped up and fake by the time their done.

    SO...

    I simply follow up with them casually asking for "FEEDBACK" and specifically ask what they "LIKED" about the entire experience.

    You will be surprised by how many people respond when you take the open casual conversation approach and you can extract some very truthful and sincere sounding testimonials out of their responses!
