Pen Names. How did you come up with one?

Hey guys, I got really tough name and surname (even for people in my own country) to say and write and I want to get a pen name for myself. So I wonder how did you came up with one for yourself (those who have it). I know my first name ''Adrian'' since it sounds similar to my real name..

Please share your own story about this!

Depends on the niche? David D'angelo works pretty well in the 'dog niche'. Ricardo Von Carlos Monte De Vasquez works well in the 'Devil's Dance' niche.... (Or Dicky 'The Land shark' Studebaker). Lol.

    Yo, Adrian, body building?

Might have several for different niches.

David DeAngelo is great. It has a ring to it and if you saw Eben Pagan's video on coming up with names he chose it because it repeated sounds in it. Just like Coca Cola; Bed, Bath&Beyond, Johnson&Johnson etc. I'd like to come up with that too but not enough creative juice!

And yeah, bodybuilding is my niche for now. I will be expanding into other niches but I prefer to have ONE name and be quite transparent. Kind of like Gary Vaynerchuk.

Then Adrian would seem to fit the bill. Especially to anyone that has seen 'Rocky' movies. Good luck. (Ari Adrian) (Yuri Yuramani)

Girl body builders could be a VERY hot item. Cannot imagine any self-respecting male body builder NOT wanting a female coach. (OK, can think of a few, but that is less than 15% of the population.)

        'Juicy in disguise', CD?

Even though the series flopped, it has a large cult following...

            Mostly female.

I was listening to a song, and I misheard the lyrics (this error is called a "mondegreen"). When I found out that the actual words were not the name I was hearing, I thought "that would be a cool name" and checked whether the dot-com was available. It was. I bought it.

I am not using this name yet. I work by feel. A name will feel like something, and I'll think it would be a good name to use for a particular type of product. This particular name is good for the dating and pickup niche, but I don't have a dating and pickup product at the moment. When I do, his name goes on it, and I start building his reputation.

I would be suprised (no matter what he say's) if Eban came up with that name because it had repeated sounds in it.

I would be more inclined to believe that he took the two most famous names in the 'relationship' niche, David Grey (Men are from mars, women are from venus) and Barbara De'Angelo (top US relationship coach) and came up with David De'Angelo, as well as percieved credibility (most people already think they have heard of him) it must help in the SE rankings.

Side note: David and Barbara were married then got divorced! Experts in relationship's sounds a bit like IM BS :-)

Watch this video where he explains why he chose it and why Coca Cola is such a great name. It's easier to remember he learned it from psychology studies he did (starts at about 2 minutes):

Either way, both are smart reasons to choose that DD name..

Ok guys...a question here I wanted to ask for a long time...

Is there any legal consequences for doing business in a name other than your real name? I know I will be told to ask a lawyer, but I am asking those who have already done this before....what do you think? did you check with your lawyers? Maybe I am obsessive, but this question was really bothering me for a long time...

It is no different than a DBA with even less constraints and in MOST jurisdictions, does not even require it be a registered alias, but as you so shrewdly pointed out, only a layer doing business in your jurisdiction of incorporation will know (or should) all the laws in said jurisdiction. In my juristiction, there are no 'downsides' and do not even require registration even though DBAs do where I am. (As I understand it, some states do require a registered alias and even the ones that do not, what you do with the alias is a greater concern than using it.)

As far as I know (I am not a lawyer either so take this at face value) you can call yourself anything you want as long as you are not trying to pass yourself off as another person, or entity.
If this were not so then there would only ever be one person of any name in the world and we would have run out of names ages ago. After all just about every film or music star uses a stage name, so why not internet marketers.

My pen name (not used here but on social media sites, ezine articles, etc.) is derived from my first cat (used for first name) + middle name (used for my last name). I've used this pen name for more than 10 years.

PS. Don't use this method if your cat's name is something like 'Fluffy' or 'Mr. Tibbs'.

I've used this a lot; it's a great tool. Sometimes you have to cycle through a few name suggestions before it comes up with a good one.

If I want unique names, I do a quick search on Google with the name in quotes. Sometimes I swap first names and lastnames around, and sometimes I enter an Initial to make it more unique.

This is also excellent if you make use of the RoboForm toolbar to manage different pen name accounts on the web.

For the first name, you take the name of your favorite childhood pet. For the last name, you take the name of the street you grew up on.

Some for me would be Shadow Brighton and Harrigan Orange.

Nothing wrong with long and hard to pronounce names. Works for me and Arnold.

When choosing a name remember to run a search on it. Otherwise, Murphy's law is bound to strike. You find some cool name to write baby-related articles under and it turns out that is the same name as the CEO of a major baby food seller.

Not a lawyer, and no one lets me play one on TV....

My understanding is that your author name is different than a business name. You can write under any name you choose (unless your state has different laws than most). What you must do is register your business name with the state.

The real interest of the legal types is this - if they decide to sue/incarcerate you for your business activities, they want to know where to find you. Business registration allows that.

Most of the gurus have a bunch of names on Ezine Articles, for instance, but they have a business name under which domains are registered, cash is accepted, etc.

      Damn, I am frightened....

      Blackie Dalke or Lyle Walnuts

      I think I'll pass.

I have always had my best luck by keeping my first name and choosing a last name which sounds good to go with it for the niche. Then no matter who I am writing to, I can always sign off my emails or posts "Barry".

Sites we have created for my wife we have followed the same pattern. It just keeps things very easy.

I have even used a last name which was very obviously "made up" in an international relationship site, and claimed "name has been changed to protect the guilty". It made for some fun blog posting.

It depends if you want to be well known for it or you want to just get a random one because you're in so many markets you don't mind.

The dirt road I grew up on was, and I kid you not, Poverty Flats. Of course, we didn't know that until the city came along one day and slapped up a sign. About two weeks later the sign was stolen and no one replaced it. Which left me to wonder, was the sign stolen because it is an awesome street name, or was it one of the people on the street who did not like that name? My mom still lives here and we are living with her for now as her health is failing. The name has been changed.

Anyway, that is the real name of the street I grew up on. Much later I worked on Prosperity Avenue. So, at some point I simply have to write a book entitled "From Poverty Flats to Prosperity Avenue - and back again."

I think I'll go with Bic Papermate for my pen name.

That would be a great name for a film or play or art critic.

Maybe I'll use that as the name of a character in my next screenplay.

But surely most of them aren't on SEO-optimized pages? Probably fairly easy to outrank.

Plus, plenty of people have names shared with others (including two copywriters both named Ray Edwards). There's a childminder in England named Sam McClane and a blues singer from New England named Sam McClain. No big deal.

But I also had to be "down to earth" so I could relate to everyone, the average man.

Just as if God came into the flesh and was a regular rabbi.

Perfect again! I'll shorten it to Reg-Rab. Doug Regrab.

      Nah, still too obvious.

Okay, I'll just make Regrab backwards.
