What is the best URL shortening service?

Hi All!

I'm looking for a url shortening service that will let me have my own account and will also let me store notes on what each shortened link is.

Bit.Ly and TinyURL don't cut it.

Can you suggest any others?

Thank you

    Hi Michael,

Thanks for the google suggestion but it doesn't give me a place for notes for each shortened url. For example, I have a number of free ebooks available to my subscribers and to other marketers to promote. I'd like to track which shortened links are from my branded copies and another affiliate's branded copies.

Does that make any sense? LOL.

    Any other suggestions?

With apologies for sounding a cautionary note, John, the only one I'd want to use myself would be one that I own and control myself.

For me, it would be a mistake to allow my business to be dependent on the continued availability, reliability, existence and terms of service of an unnecessary third-party service. Just look at all the Warriors who had a major panic during last year when Tinyurl suddenly went into bankruptcy and all their links disappeared overnight (and for a while, before luckily being rescued, and the links salvaged, on that occasion, by a new corporate owner).

For me, it would make absolutely no sense at all to put myself in this position, when (for all my purposes - though I appreciate yours may perhaps be different?) there are far more reliable, sensible alternatives available which will leave me in control, instead of someone else, if anything goes wrong.

I don't see Google going anywhere, it's true, but the world and the forum were full of people saying exactly the same thing about Tinyurl the day before that one suddenly disappeared. I really do find it difficult to understand why people take a chance on these things. Aren't there any other ways around whatever your problem is?

(Digression alert: call me a skepchick, but I do find it pretty difficult to take people seriously when their sig-file here is trying to sell internet marketing advice, and the link they want me to click on, to find out about it, is "tiny.cc" or something similar  ).

Hey Alexa, you know, I was thinking the same thing.

I use redirects in many cases ... any suggestion how I might easily monitor traffic to these redirects?

The best one available is one that YOU OWN... That way, your shortened URL's are never at the whim of a third-party...

All URL-shortening services delete links they think will be a problem and make them look bad...

Some URL-shortening services go under, as TinyURL did last year, although I think it was resurrected by angel funds...

On existing services, I like bit.ly

Hey Brad, this looks great. I really like the idea of hosting my own service for my own use.

    Have a look at shorturl.com
it is free but the paid option (1.8$ per URL) is very good and actually lets you
put in meta tags and more. I specially recommend the sub-domain option

Google just released their version of a url shortener. I am not too sure as to what all it does. However I know it does track clicks and will link to yur analytics and so on. It may offer just what you are looking for.

I agree with Alexa Smith and tpw.

The best URL shortening service is the one you own and host.

I'm not encouraged to click on a concealed link.

I think it's best to have your own domain and install a script that can not only redirect, but also allow you to track and follow the progression of your statistics.
Some scripts can even track sales, depending on the payment processor chosen.

I also think the domain name on which the script is installed should be carefully chosen, so as not to be suspicious, in such a way that the prospect knows they are going to get more info by clicking on the link.

Redirect and tracking scripts are plenty all over the net and the best ones is the IM world.
It simply takes a little time to search the one that suits your needs, install it and you're ready to go.

      Great Success To You,

      Jeanne

One for you to look at is one that operates on your server that way you have complete control and you can track every link. Look into redirection scripts that can be hosted and see whats out there. You can always get a coder to amend an OS script to your liking.
