Traffic Observations after 2 Years of Starting My Site

Majority of my traffic comes from search - 60%. Second amount of traffic is from referral sites - 20%.

Top referral traffic still comes two years later from manual link exchanges with sites on the first page of Google for my same keywords.

Next highest source of referral traffic is from Yahoo Answers. Many thousands answered.

I have no idea where my direct traffic comes from so I can't quantify that. But it is 20%.

I have done allot of social bookmarking, articles, press releases and Twittering. I see almost no lasting effect from it.

Only value I see for Twitter/Facebook is for ongoing connection once people find me, but not for traffic.

Highest quality people I meet and get traffic from is LinkedIn.

Have done a ton of PPC and Facebook ads. They give big spurts, but I don't see an ongoing uptick in traffic after a campaign.

Always put your URL in your ads in bold. I get tons of direct hits during a campaign that way - saves money. Free clicks.

This is telling me, after starting my site two years ago - where to spend my time:

High quality back-links, create lots of content for search and a bit of Yahoo Answers

Forget social bookmarking, articles, press releases. May help with back-links and page rank but who cares if you get no long-term referral traffic.

Lots of marketers find my music here and actually use it in videos - so WF seems worth the time when I am inspired to post Internet stuff no one else on earth cares about.
