Guide for Editing a Blog?

I'm new to Wordpress and can't figure out how to navigate and customize themes the way I want. I'm only finding horribly outdated videos from years ago so I'd be interested to hear if anyone could link me to something more current (and free).

Keep at it. You will find some themes are difficult to personalize. Just recently for our newest blog, we finished up scrapping it as proved near impossible to change it only slightly for our requirements and installed another theme we have used for years without any hassles.

Just keep looking for one that's adaptable and take note of the earlier comments as there is a lot of information around on Wordpress.

There are 1200+ free WP themes out there. You can search the themes within your WP CP, or on WordPress.org

You'll find something you want, and if you know where to look, you can even edit the PHP files to say anything you want.

I am using Suffusion theme and it has more customizations than I think I'll ever use.

    Good luck!

What WordPress theme are you using? I'm sure the theme developer will have a blog or forum for support purpose. You might as well send them a tweet, if they've a Twitter account. Otherwise, if it's related to WordPress itself, asking on WordPress's official support forum or via Twitter with a #WordPress hashtag would worth a try.

Tim Spears got a great WSO that ALL beginners and intermediate users of WP should purchase. I really got more than my moneys worth out of it thats for sure. Shoot, experts could probably get a lot out of it too.

  • Let me know what your looking to do to modify the theme. Usually, you can get into Appearance>Editor and can find all of the source files there to edit.

It's called Grey Matter. I haven't tried to do much customization yet but like I didn't know where to edit the about section and other things. I really just need a knowledge of how to edit every aspect of the blog and how to navigate around in wordpress. I'm completely new to blogs but see the importance of them so I'm trying to wrap my head around it without spending anything let alone hundreds or thousands to have one professionally made.

There aren't any what you see is what you get blog editing choices out there, are there?

The first thing you need to do is get the idea of separating form and content. On most blogs, the About section is actually just a page named "About". To change it, edit the page in the editor.

To change the appearance, you'll be modifying your theme's templates. Depending on the theme and the change you want to make, this can be very easy or very complicated.

If you want the information straight from the horse's mouth, go to WordPress › Blog Tool and Publishing Platform, click Docs from the menu and start browsing your way through the Codex (the online manual). Sign up for an account in the Support forum. It's kind of like the Warrior Forum for Wordpress - ask good questions and you pretty much always get good answers.

With those resources in hand, the best way to learn your way around is to set up what I call a "lab blog" - a blog whose only purpose is to be your playground while you experiment with different things you want to do. Once you learn how to do something, you can transfer that knowledge to your 'real' blogs. And if you mess things up too badly, you can scrap the whole thing and start over with a clean installation.
