How Do You Determine the Commercial Value of a Domain Name before You Register It?

I want to buy a domain name but I don't know how profitable it's going to be.

Is there any fail-proof way of determining whether a domain name has commercial value before registering it?

In short there are no sure fire way to know of a domains value. You can check to see what similar domains have sold for on a number of domain selling sites like sedo but a domain is worth what a buyer will pay for it particularly once you get in 4 figures plus.

Any domain name can be profitable it is all about how you market it. Wether or not it is a keyword rich domain helps. Although there is no way to determine how much you can make for a given domain before it is even registered. If the domain has recently dropped you may be able to get a price on it for it may have some backlinks pointing to it. However once again that is only a guess as to what the domain is worth and not how much can be made with the domain. If you are just looking to buy a domain and sell it well you still have to put some work into it. Even then if it is not a highly searched domain or a keyword rich domain that the keyword gets a few hundred searches a day. Then it is likely to stay at a value of purchasing the domain.

The value also depends on the tld is is a .com .net .org .inf .movi dot what ever. But again unless you put work into the domain and build it up it is worth nothing more then you payed for the domain.

Rich, thanks for the quick response.

However, I want to find out how many people are searching for the keywords in the domain name I want to register and how many competing sites are using the same keywords.

I don't want to sell the domain. I want to develop it into a website where I can sell my products and affiliate products.

How do I know if those searching for the keywords in a domain name are hungry buyers and not just those looking for free stuffs?

If your domain is from keyword, then type that keyword in google and if in the result, there is google adsense ad, you can get money from that ^__^

A good way to determine commercial intent of a domain name is to Google the keywords. How many people are competing for that keyword? How many Adword ads are shown? Do some keyword research. How many people are searching for that keyword?

Thanks all for you replies but please I have another question:

Now, I have done some keyword research. I found out that my keywords have a search volume of over 200,000 and about 5,000 sites are competing for the same keywords.

I also found out that there Amazon products related to the keywords and there are ezinearticles, youtube videos related to the keywords.

    What do you think?

    Cheers.

Use the exact key word match with Google ad word tool, not the broad one for starters. Also do not combine keywords together in your domain name just because KW # 1 gets 200,000 searches per month and KW# 2 gets 150,000 searches per month. Combine them together 1st and then do an exact word search in Google. You be surprised how combining 2 KW's together does not get the results you would think. Keep it as natural as possible. If the KW phrase is RED NIKE SHOE SALE then go for REDNIKESHOESALE.com .org or .net

King Shiloh - The best way to determine the market value of a domain name is to listen to people who are buying domain names. How? By comparing your domain name to others that have already sold. You can do this at a site like DN Sale Price- Domain Name Sales Price and History. Enter a few specs about your domain name, and you'll get a list of similar domains that have actually sold, along with the price they actually sold for. You can further research some of those 'comps' by checking to see if they have backlinks, traffic, PR, etc. to see if there are any 'external' reasons for the pricing.

It's like buying real-estate. You want to get price-comps of other houses that have sold in the neighborhood to help you determine the market value of a particular house you're interested in buying.

    Gene,

What do you have to say about my question?

Meanwhile, I have concluded my research but I found out that most of the popular domain registration and web hosting companies accept only PayPal.

Please is there anyone here who uses both AlertPay and PayPal?

If there is anyone who is willing to help me, I will send domain registration and hosting fees to your AlertPay account then you will use your PayPal to pay for my domain and hosting fees.

I actually saw a site that accepts AlertPay but it looks like one of those scam sites around.

Can anybody help me, please? PM me or reply here if you are willing to help.

    Cheers.

Well, you say that it has a search volume of 200,000. Are you sure? Are you using EXACT match for the phrase? If not, that number is useless.

You also mention that "5,000 sites are competing for the same keywords". How have you determined this? If you do a Google search for the exact keyword term, the only competition you have to worry about are the 10 first page listings. Find out how many backlinks they have and what their PR is. If you can beat those statistics, then the rest of the 5000 make no difference.

Thanks Gene. I think I did the keyword research very well. I'm even surprised that the domain name is still available because from my analysis, it's a very good domain name with great potential though it requires hard work like any other niche.

Are you looking at it as a domainer or for your own web property (niche site, etc.)?

If it's the latter don't over-analyze the process. Someone else will register it while you're still analyzing. Even if you make a mistake you're out less than $10 so don't spend too much time on this process.

For my niches sites I go by keyword research but nothing in fail-proof my friend.

I'm looking at it for my own web property.

I have decided to go for it but my problem right now, as I stated in my post above, is that I use AlertPay but almost all the credible domain registration and hosting sites I saw accept PayPal.

Also to Find out how many backlinks your competitors have for a KW Phrase you are targeting and to see their PR also, I recommend using a free tool called the "Cherry Picker" cherrypickersoftware.com it's free to use and free to download
it will show who are the top 10, 20, 30 ranked on Google for your KW Phrase, and show you just how many back links they have going to their URL or Page and their PR too.
This way you get a heads up on how much work you have to do to get ranked for your KW Phrase in addition to buying the Domain Name.
