What do you respond to in a sales letter?

I've tried to understand what makes a good sales letter, email or any other type of communication that really grabs a person but also makes you trust the marketer over the long term.

I've noticed that I really respond to communications that tell people they're going to have to earn it and work the system rather than just "push a button, instant profit." I understand the psychology behind it but to me it seems a bit disingenuous to lead people in that way when it's far from the truth.

Also what are some of the best practices you follow in order to build trust with your customers?

Be honest with them. There is no magic bullet, and everyone knows that. Most IMers write sales letters that are way too long and dripping with sales slime. Everyone claims that their product is worth may more than they are charging, and every customer knows that trick. So the marketer looses credibility and rather than being a trusted advisor, they're seen as just another sales dude.

Identify your target market, speak to their problem, and offer a solution. Your headline has to get their attention, and somewhere in the first paragraph or two you must cause them to think, "yeah, that's me!"
