questions about transferring website ownership

I am buying a website and I am going to use the same hosting that the previous owner used. How can I make sure that I don't lose all of its rankings?

I don't know how to transfer a site and wanted to know if you guys had any advice before I get started.

You won't lose ranking with a site transfer. The ranking is not with the hosting, it is with the site and domain itself, so it really isn't a problem as far as ranking goes.

If you're using the same hosting as the owner, why does anything need to be transferred?

Just get the domain pushed to your account and ensure the nameservers are correct and you're done. I would recommend putting the site on your own hosting (unless the owner is letting you take over the account completely) as I know a number who have been burned when the owner vanishes and leaves you with no hosting

I do not have anything set up with the same hosting account he uses. Doreo, I think it is. With that being said, how do I make sure that I have the same nameservers? Will I need to buy my own hosting first, then transfer the domain and the website needs to be uploaded to my hosting?

How do I ensure that there is no downtime on the site. That way I don't lose my rankings.

You are best to get your own hosting. Then you can transfer the site to your own hosting. There is likely to be a little down time during the transfer process but not much, depending on how long it takes for the nameservers to change.

So once you have our hosting, then you will know your nameservers and once the seller transfers the domain to you, then you can change the nameservers to point to your hosting.

Does the seller offer a transfer deal? Some sellers will transfer the site for you for a fee or if you sign up to hosting through their affiliate link then they might transfer it for free.
