Are you an Optimistic Failure?

Hello,

This post is inspired by Tim Ferriss's 4 Hour Work Week. If you haven't read/listened it, its a must have!

Since I want to go back to listening to it and actually doing some 'work' tonight, I'm going to keep it short.

Fear disguised as Optimism?

Some excerpts from chapter 2.

"Fear comes in many forms and we usually don't call it by its 4 letter name. And most intelligent people in the world dress it up as something else. Optimistic Denial.

Most who avoid quitting there job entertain the thought that their course will improve with time or increases in time.

Do you really think it will improve or is it wishful thinking and an excuse for inaction? If you were confident in improvement, would you really be questioning things so? Generally not.

This is fear of the unknown disguised as Optimism. Are you better off than 1 year ago? 1 month ago? 1 week ago?

If not, things will not improve by themselves.
------------------------------------------------

Thought provoking? I don't know about you but I can relate to it. For a long time in my life I've thought that 'positive thinking' is always a better way out, so in times of adversity I would just thinking of the positive things, stuff that I'm grateful about and the light at the end of the tunnel... the darkest hour is just before dawn... and stuff like that.

Now there is nothing wrong with it, in fact it does help and particularly help in feeling better and seeing the bright side of things, giving hope and patience to deal with the adverse situation.

BUT

Was it Optimistic Denial?

When I look back and reflect on the past, it has been Optimistic Denial in more cases than I expected. Just wishing for better things and looking at the situation with a positive perspective IS NOT the solution or a remedy for this problem.

The key points will shout out to those who are looking for them in the excerpts quoted above, but here are 3 things you can take away from it.

Nothing moves without action.

Optimism is only 'part' of the solution, merely hoping things will get better isn't going to work.

Reflect, weekly, monthly or yearly. Whenever possible. Judge, revise, restate goals/plans/actions to move towards where you want to go.

All of the above are pieces of the same puzzle, and you need them ALL.

Oh I'm writing too much again... I'll get back to 'work'.

Food for thought.
