Accessing Paypal while travelling

Hello all,

A quick question, I will be traveling by the end of October and will be out of country for at least 3-4 months.

Its not all vacation but some of it is. Since I can use my debit card wherever I am, I was very cool with it until recently paypal restricted my account when it was accessed from a different country.

Although the access was authorized by me, Paypal system flagged the activity and the account was temporarily limited. I called them up and it was all good.

But now that I'm traveling and will accessing my paypal account to withdraw funds into my Bank to be ultimately used via my debit card, what I do?

I do not have a Paypal debit card, and it isn't even available as an option.

Your help is appreciated.

The simple solution is to phone them and ask them to put a note on your account, give them all the details of your travels and where you'll be accessing your account from.

Then when/if your account gets flagged again they will see the note, and all will be fine.

    Strange,

I may change my mind tomorrow, but I've never had problems like the ones mentioned above.

I swipe my card several times at the same gas stations, get money every day at different ATMs, I gave my card to my daughter and she used it in Uruguay, Chile, Argentina and Peru with no problems. I did call them and told them my daughter would have my card out of the country and they said no problem.

PayPal is a real pain when it comes to security. It's great to have good security but it seems that they are 10x as sensitive as the average bank and end up giving you a lot of headaches.

    Here's what I recommend:

    - Have the PayPal phone number to hand. That way if you have trouble you can resolve it quickly over the phone.

    - Have digital copies of items that PayPal ask for so that you can send them instantly if required. (make sure such files are protected on your computer like in a hidden encrypted TrueCrypt file).

    - Inform PayPal before hand what countries you will be going too.

    - When you move to a new place ideally log into your PayPal account and do nothing but log in for a couple of days. This seems to help. If you just land somewhere and then try to send payments then that seems to act as a flag to PayPal.

Thanks all the wonderful people who have replied.

I called them, told them the problem and the 'adviser' said they can't do anything about it, the flagging is automated and the 'system' flags it as soon as it becomes 'suspicious' of the activity.

Chris, I will be taking some scanned copies with me in the computer just in case I have to verify stuff, but being abroad having to verify and wait to access the funds will be a pain.

Do I call them again and ask them politely to speak to higher grade official or something?

    Thanks everyone

The problem isn't getting flagged, the problem is the risk management guys seeing the flag then pressing the LIMIT ACCOUNT button.

If you request a note is put onto your account, they will see the note after your account has been flagged and your account won't be limited.

Ahan so when it gets flagged thats not an issue in itself or at least doesn't prompt an automated action.

I'll have to speak to the Risk Management peeps than. What do I say when I call?

"I want to talk to a Risk Manager?"
