First I would like to apologise to all those struggling to get good rankings on Google, It is not my intention to upset you.

I read some posts here about long tailed keywords and off-line marketing. I thought I would experiment to see what I could do.
I chose the keywords "Best Plumber Christchurch" and thought that if I could get a get good ranking on Google, I could perhaps find a plumber in the Christchurch area (uk) that would be interested in "renting" the website.

I used a free template, wordpress, posted some articles and linked to it by posting a reply on someone's blog (1). I also did a quick video that I posted on youtube.
I emailed a dozen plumbers in the area and offered to put their details on the website free, while I tried to get it higher in the rankings.
Well, no reply to my emails and what with other things, I just let it slip. That was a couple of months ago.

Just checked today to find not only does the website rank top, page 1, on Google and Yahoo for the keywords "Best plumber Christchurch"
It is also ranking on page one of both search engines for "Best Plumber". (Google 4 out of 3,680,000 results)

I have not done anything else to the website, it just seems to have floated to the top.

What should I do now? Send out more emails? Sell the website? Any suggestions?

  • Be thankful, Id sell it! Kaching!
  • Are you positive that it's actually ranking where you say it is for that term?

Have you tried searching through a proxy? It might be a deceptive cookie courtesy the big G.
  • Even if it isn't number 4 for "best plumber", being #1 for "best plumber christchurch" has value. There has to be a plumber in that area that sees the value in it and either would want to buy it or rent it from you. Just keep emiling, calling, or go in person to the business and talk to them.

You could also do a video review of the ranking and show them what could be theirs and email that to them also letting them know the same email is going out to their competition and the first to respond gets it.

    • How can you say ranking for Best Plumber Christchurch has value. There is no value for it because there is almost no traffic for that term. Now if it did happen to get the best plumber spot as he says then he should find a company that says they would like to advertise on his site or flat out sell it.

I actually just ran it through one of my rank checkers. That site is in spot one for the term Best Plumber Christchurch. I could actually take a domain called jisper and rank it in the number one spot for the term Best Plumber Christchurch. However my rank checker shows that he does have a spot on yahoo for best plumber. That spot is number 174 and does not show up at all on google or bing.

Do you think you have the site stared this would make it appear as if it was in the 4-5 spot. I jst searched the first 20 pages by hand and did not see your site anywhere and according to my rank checker that would be correct. It would not show up anywhere with in the first 200 spots. My advice to you is get it to rank for the term best plumber and maybe do some reviews of plumbers in your area much like angieslist does then you should be able to get some buyers for your site.
  • great advice thank you

  • "deceptive cookie courtesy the big G. "
Ouch! cleared cookies, logged out of Google, looks the same.
Could somebody here reading this, do me a great favour and check it out for me
    Google
    Keyword "Best Plumber"
    The website is http://www.best-plumber-christchurch.co.uk
My computer shows it at position 5, page 1

    • You're showing up on the google.co.uk search rankings and not the global google rankings.

I'm sure that result still has it's fair share of value, just market it a bit and you may be in luck. I would suggest targeting plumbers that actually do have some advertising running on other advertising platforms since they'll be more likely to entertain your offer.

Give them an idea of the recurring potential leads this investment could make to them. Make them realize how they could effortlessly expand their clientèle and economically cut down on other advertising methods that are proving to be not as effective.

    • Yep, same here John: Position 1 and 2 for "best plumber christchurch" and position 5 for "best plumber".

Not bad for a little experiment!
  • Good enough! Thank you.

  • I think the problem is your choice of longtail keyword. No-one (really -look at the google keyword tool set to "exact") searches for "best plumber christchurch". If you take out "best" and just use "plumber christchurch" you get a handful of monthly searches - and bear in mind that there is a much bigger Christchurch in NZ.

I guess in this case your keyword is just too narrow. I can understand why no-one wants the site. Can you work on it to rank it for "plumber christchurch" - it might have more appeal then.
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • Good Point Rosetrees, it is only on page 4 for "Plumber Christchurch".
I will have a go at optimising the 2nd page of the website for that and see what happens.

So is the choice of keywords the reason it got up there so quickly.
I checked my Diary, it has had one vid on youtube that I did for the contact page, but I do not think that rates as a backlink. One article on Ezinearticle dot com and one post on a another marketeers blog who has backlinked.

Or is it just that I am using wordpress with an seo plugin behind the website?

    • The short answer is "yes" to the first part. If you design a website around a keyword that has little or no competition then it's easy to get on p1 of Google.

No-one else is competing for that term as no-one is searching for it.

Design a site for "toookkehhll thingies in sommmmewehere villlleee" (exact match, of course!) and you'll be no1 in no time.
  • Your site's Google page 1 #1 position is worthless - unless it translates into traffic to your site.

Traffic to your site would demonstrate a demand for the service offered. Your job now is to develop a healthy flow of traffic, month on month.

Then, your site will have some perceived value to the best plumber in Christchurch.

    • Out of curiosity I just checked Google Adwords Keyword Tool and there are very few local searches for things related to "Christchurch Plumber" for both Exact and Broad (< 170 max). That is, if you believe the GAKT....

That could explain why you got front page so easily. If you get to 1st spot, it may still get you some orders for plumbing jobs though, so try to aim for the 1st spot for all variations of "Christchurch plumber."
  • Just an Idea, firstly as many have said traffic is the key so why not put Google analytics on your site and see maybe you have decent traffic that you can verify... will make it worth more.

Also if you type in www.google.co.nz/ncr that give you the google as if you are searching from New Zealand. You will see for 'Best Plumber Christchurch' you are still on page 1 position 4 and like Rosetrees said it is a much bigger target market I believe. (More famous as a Christchurch than the one in england) So maybe offer it to some New Zealanders you may get a sale or a lease quicker.
  • Side Note: I am not sure the plumbers in Christchurch NZ will be short of work any time soon given the huge earthquakes they have been having - might pay to stick to UK Christchurch plumbers, or best plumbers for a while
  • ive got many websites on the first page for certain keywords, but unless ur getting quality traffic its not gonna help.
  • I would follow up again with those plumbers and exhaust those efforts till I found someone to buy in. I would also try to find other markets and do the same thing you did with the plumbers eg Builders or Electricians. You have to sell this, tell them that they will get more customers don't talk about rankings. Sell them on the fact that if they don't buy it their competitor will.
