Blog vs e-Newsletter - Which is better

Hello,

I was going to start a blog related to a niche i have experience in. The idea was that i was going to build the blog until i reached "authority status" i would then use my guru status to make money from affiliate programs related to my niche.

Recently i have begun to wonder if i should do the same instead using a e-newsletter (think talkbiz just in a different niche)

Does anyone have any experience with both mediums, which one is it easier to make money with.

With a blog you can interact with readers and use SEO to get traffic, also if you write really good content there is a chance it will go viral on a site like digg or stumble upon, you can also do stuff like guest posts. You can also put banner ads on your blog.

With a newsletter you don't have to design anything, you can send a plain text message which allows you to focus on your copy which i feel is the most important.

I feel that it is also easier to sell things to your list than it is to your blog readers, having a list can also be used for other promotions other than my newsletter.

To me a newsletter feels more personal, also because they have to opt in to the list you are already building compliance.

Also having a squeeze page instead of a blog is a lot better because your can always improve the copy for better opt ins and split test as well.

What are your thoughts...

They can be useful in their own ways but using them together can be a good way to go. You can use blogs to write down your tips or latest products or press release. Newsletter on the other hand can be useful if your subscribers don’t really read your blog and still be updated. What you can do is to write your blog and send out newsletters about the summary of your latest work or entry. Simultaneously, you can reach your blog followers and your other subscribers to ensure your better revenue.
